Can anyone explain how to remove this thing? It's blocking the hard drive bay, preventing the installation of a slave drive. It looks like you can push the tabs down or out, but they won't budge. MY friend and I have spent awhile trying to get it off, but nothing works.

That's one hell of a heatsink. My guess is that those tabs pull out a bit and then up. What type of CPU is that heatsink sitting on?

It's a Celeron 1.6Ghz, but we just decided to take the mobo out instead of risking the chance of screwing up the heatsink.

Could just be secured very tightly.

Have you still got the installation manual for your PC? If the shop you bought the computer from done the installation for you, or know how to install the PC, contact them and ask them.

That is one big fucking passive heatsink....Like damm... Surprised Surprised

The two bronze coloured clips should come off if you push them. They are the only pressure points I see.

I dont think those clips are bronze, it might just be the light. Anyway the only way you will get that thing off is with some serious force, but yet being very gentle. Since those clips are made of metal, rather than plastic, there bound to have latched into its self. So basically, just give it alittle love untill its ready to loosen up.

That would be the CPU heatsink that is blocking it...and it is huge because...that's right...I am supprised none of you noticed, THERE IS NO FAN ON TOP. Thus, the heatsink must be bigger to cool enough without a fan accelerating the air.

Peace out,

You were probably right to just remove the MB and leave the heat sink attached.

There is about 70 lbs of force applied on the CPU (socket 478). To look down on the motherboard, one may even see the curvature in the motherboard at that point. Over time, the heat sink may become obstinate, and the fiberglass of the MB may retain that shape.

Dude I said passive. If you knew anything that means with no fan...

(Grender) I didn't mean that the metal was bronze, just the colouring of the metal due to lighting conditions. Smile

Ya just give it a little bit of work and you should be able to free that heatsink off. I know my clips are a pain. Most are because just like Endergate mentioned, they need to exert a lot of force to maintain thermal contact.

Okay, I'm no longer working on my friends PC, but I just bought a new case for myself.

And I'd like to take this time to brag. Very Happy

It's an Aspire X-Alien Silver Steel Server Case, and kicks all amounts of unholy ass. Pics. I recommend it highly. Smile

It's going to waste right now, though. I don't have any other pieces yet (I wanted to get the case first so I have a place to put them when I do get them), so I put a shitty 1GB HDD that I've got into it. I hope it doesn't taint its glory.

It does have room for 5, though, so... Wink

The thing I really like about the case, though, is the fact that you don't just slide a drive into a bay and mount it there, you put each drive into a tray, and thus it's removable easily. (Each level in the 3.5" internal bays in the interior pics is removable, as are the floppy and CD bays. There's even a removable mobo tray, too.)

Edit: And on the topic of weird heatsinks, I just found this at New Egg. The Bloomin' Onion of heatsinks!

Don't know if you want to know this anymore or not, but you might try pulling the little tabs up. Thats how most 478 HSF are installed.

And for a 478 heatsink, it's not very big at all.

Them heatsinks actually can cool down your high performing chips fairly well as long as you have some airflow through your system. The copper base absorbs the heat then the aluminium pins dissipate it. The more fins or pins the heatsink has, the better at getting rid of heat it is.

This is the zalman flower passive cooling, it actually works really well.
