when u format your whole computer and install windows XP again ,what do you in order to be safe from the viruses when u first log on the internet???

I use it, its very good, of course i have a router, but its a nice little back up.
But then patch windows asap
In the end it doesn't matter if you are who you say you are. You will still mean nothing to me.
When i have kids, everytime i drive past a fast food restaurant, im gonna punch my kid in the face, then they'll never wanna come..

It would be more efficient to slipstream the installation before hand, burn to a cd, enable xp's built in firewall, load av / fw and then patch.
remember; nat != firewall

Although NAT != Firewall.
The majority of self replicating (No user intervention required) viruses cannot penetrate a NAT router.
Hence a fairly safe and fairly cheap solution is to connect via a NAT router then make MS windows update your first site to download all the patches.
Especially the Internet Explorer ones.
After that you will **probably** be ok.
PS You could always consider installing a virus scanner :biggrin:

Get the XP updates from http://www.windowsupdate.com !!!!!
Then get a good Firewall software
Then get an Antivirus scanner
Then router
then proxy
then cut off internet
Well, you can stop at AV scanner lol
I just stick to updates, router, and just recenntly i started to use McAfee AV.
I tend to be a bitch about security on my comp.
I found I had The blaster worm in 380 something instances on my secondary drive, continually leaking onto my main drive :S
I installed the patch AFTER i had it tho, so no damage done tome or anyone else.

AVG from http://www.grisoft.com is a great free anti-virus software package. The ability of right-clicking a file and checking it for viruses it really handy and also the bootup scanner & email scanner are handy.
As gibberish said, having a router is much safer. Basically you can use the internet as normal but when something tries to attack your computer the NAT in the router doesn't know where to send the attack to so basically it doesn't reach your PC. While this is a bad thing if it's data you requested, you can always open ports that you are expecting data on (IE port 21 for FTP). In combination with a firewal, windows update patchesl and virus checker you have a fairly secure system.

Dude you originally asked how to log onto to the internet safely.
The answer is to get a good virus scanner and/or a good firewall.
This costs money (minimum $50)
As far as firewalls are concerned you basically have three choices:
Software - Program you install on your PC.
NAT Router - Plugs in between your computer and modem.
Hardware Firewall - True hardware firewall.
Personally I prefer using hardware firewalls so thats what I use, however you really need to be a techie to use a HW firewall effectively.
I am pretty happy with my firewall so I don't bother with a virus scanner but the choice is yours.

Virus scans are still needed if one is behind a firewall. For better security; the two need to work in conjunction. Another choice for a firewall is with an older box; add nic's and then get a linux firewall distro (i.e. smoothwall, mnf ...)
