I know exactily what you mean. The first thing I do when I join a game in progress is hit "k" (well actually "5" on my numpad since i use the arrows) to see what the base status is. There's nothing worse than hearing "GDI Power Plant is under attack" while you're a tech inside repairing and someone on the other end of the map is spamming:
"Building need repair"
"Building need repair"
"Building need repair"
"Building need repair"
"Building need repair"
Also, good point by Blazer. I use the "j" ("4") alot, but I never thought of using it for that purpose.
