I cannot join some dedicated servers and all non-dedicated servers. I have enabled all of the ports that I'm supposed to.I have windows xp home, zone alarm,1.5Mbps DSL connection.I have a friend that has the same problem and when either of us try to host a game of Renegade the other can't join the game.I'm totally confused,I've seen the error message "Operation Timed Out" until I'm sick of it.Can anyone help?

what connection error messages do you get, and are they always the same, and always with the same servers?

Yes,it is always the same error message and always on the same servers and when either of us try to join a hosted game that's not on a dedicated server. It really confuses me that it let's us join most dedicated servers but wonder why it doesn't let us join the rest? Two examples of dedicated servers that it won't let us join are:Swami's flying circus & Mad Spy's Hideaway, there's more but those two come to mind,If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.

I am 99% sure this is a firewall problem.

Most people who host non-dedicated servers (and a few who host dedicated) don't know how to set up a firewall correctly.

In order to connect to a game at least one person needs to setup their firewall correctly.

Hence if both parties haven't configured their firewalls correctly the connection will fail usually with a "Timeout" message.

Have you set the "Firewall Port" setting in renegade?
If you haven't then, I am certain you haven't got your firewall configured correctly, because you will need to open the port in the firewall to match the setting in Renegade.

The standard value for renegade is 4848
So set the "Firewall Port" option in Renegade to 4848
Then open port 4848 for UDP both inbound and outbound.

If you configure your firewall correctly you should be able to connect to almost all of the games.

Gib.

What is zone alarm? A firewall I assume?

Well if your running windows xp it comes with a firewall on it as default.

Open control panel and then network connections. Select yours and then click properties. Go to advanced and uncheck " Protect my computer..."
to turn off the default windows xp firewall. Not sure if it will help but its worth a shot
