Never thought I'd see the day...
EDIT:
It seems at the moment you can't buy the individual games on their own unless you have to pay a subscription.
BUT if you buy the Ultimate Collection for a one-off cost, your steam account then gets all the C&C games as individual games ready to choose to download No EA account nor subscription required!
I've just uninstalled my original Renegade and am currently reinstalling it via Steam to test what the experience is like, will report back.

The vanilla experience downloading and installing from Steam:
- You miss the funky installer experience, ah well.
- It installs version 1.037
- The installation directory is now C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Command & Conquer Renegade\
- The desktop shortcut has been updated to HD
- On first launch, Steam gives you this:
- Renegade Config allows all resolutions, but the game doesn't handle it great, click on these thumbnails to see:
- Choosing WOL shows you the empty XWIS lobby. Choosing GameSpy takes you to the unmodded GameSpy menu which obviously doesn't work. As such, vanilla installs of Renegade at the moment don't see any online servers, getting them to run the TT patch will fix this and a world of other issues.
I quit the game then downloaded the latest TT installer (4.8.1)
It instantly detects the correct Steam directory, does it's thing but advised me that my serial number is invalid. As a test, I left it blank and everything worked regardless.

If you have a problem with "rubber banding" or you cannot move when you join an online game with the steam version, then do this:
- join an online server
- hit F8, a command prompt will show up in the top left corner
- type: net_update_rate 30
this will set your net update rate to a value different from 0, which is a bug in the steam release.

This luckily shouldn't be needed anymore after our last patch.
