edit- I installed the Tiberian Technologies client first.
It tells me to put in the disk, after I do, videos play and it takes me to the game options- Single Player/Multiplay Online/LAN/Practice/etc.
When I click on Multiplay it takes me to Gamespy/Westwood.
I tried Renegade Resurrection (what I used to use), but the game always crashes at startup :-/
Any help or ideas? Thanks in advance.

I bet there are a few players that try ren multiplayer for the first time, only to find out they cant play, and lack of instructions doesn't help.

WOL is completely screwed up these days... back before XWIS it actually used to tell you when your password / username were incorrect, instead of just hiding it away in the MOTD everyone just clicks away without reading to get to the server list.
Why XWIS can't just implement the login system properly is beyond me...

Clone Degeneration. They didn't implement the login system properly when the real thing was around and it was easier to determine how it worked. Now that the real thing is gone, a proper implementation is far more difficult because it requires reverse engineering the client itself as opposed to just snooping on the text protocol it uses. Any clones of XWIS would likely be degenerate in other ways.

Even if it didn't work as well as the original implementation it would still be better than the current situation where any theoretical new player wouldn't have a clue how to actually create an account on XWIS or figure out how to debug login problems.
Neither the GSA nor WOL ingame options work properly at the moment... pretty bad state of affairs really.
