Sorry but X-men is part of a different fictional universe to the avengers, which was indeed awesome.
At least to my understanding it is.
Not due to comic book knowledge but knowledge that X-men and the avengers are owned by different studios.

They exist in the same Marvel universe, and often cross over. They have whole volumes dedicated to it. Wolverine was in fact an Avenger at some point.

It probably won't happen, for the reasons you mentioned, and many others. However, they are technically all part of the same universe.
Technically, you could have the fantastic 4, Spider Man or even Ghost Rider turn up (Nicholas Cage will do anything for a buck these days, why not?).
