Just something else to talk about...
First off, I certainly realize that the RIAA has a right to be angry with people who download music, and I'd also certainly say that they have a right to be compensated for it...but give me a break.
261 people were issued subpoenas yesterday, and the lowest a case has been settled for so far is around $3,000. If each person got that minimum, it's still $783,000 for the RIAA.
If each of those people had an average of 50 songs, and were ordered to pay a fine worth double the value of what they'd "stolen" (assuming a $15 CD with 20 songs), the RIAA would get $20,000 for 261 people. Now, I think repaying double the price is more than fair; normally, shoplifting of something such as a CD is treated as a misdemeanor.
So $20,000 is fair, but $783,000 is what their getting...hmm.

Actually the lowest settlement was $2000 and that was against a twelve year old girl.

My brother, a lawyer, and I had a long complicated (I am still alittle confused) discussion about this whole thing. He knows basically all the laws by heart and their is one major flaw in the RIAA's law suits, and that is file sharing was never made illegal. (this is the part where it got complicated) I remember him saying the only foot the RIAA is standing on is the copyright violations, but could easily be shot down by the "file sharing is not illegal."
I have no idea if I made sense.........but maybe I can get my brother to type it out for me.

Taximes | Oh, by the way...Anyone notice any similarities to our favorite time periods, the 1600s and the 1950s? Seems a lot like a witch hunt to me...
Hundreds of people be accused and prosecuted, but the RIAA is offering them amnesty if they come forward? The exact same thing happened during the Witch Trials and the Red Scare. Confess to being a witch? You're off the hook! Admit to being a Communist? Sure, just name a few more and you're free to go!
It's pretty sad how America hasn't learned that lesson yet

xSeth2k2x | it will tkae them forever to sue everyone and besides
|
They don't have to sue everyone...I have no doubt that they're able to shut down a few P2P networks. They can only "find" you if you're sharing music, so the simple solution for most people is to stop sharing. Yeah, well, that'll save your own skin just fine, but the RIAA is still winning because they'll have succeeded in shutting down the P2P networks when everyone stops sharing.
The issue is deeper than that, though. If they do close down P2P networks, next they'll be after burned CDs. Someone can buy a CD, burn it, give it to all their friends and then resell it. Same as a P2P network, just physically and not digitally. That'll be a much, much tougher fight, though...

Actually, everytime soemthing like this comes up all they are doing is giving these places free advertising. Think about how popular Napster got from the whole Metallica thing. They more than doubled in size. Fact is that no matter what the RIAA does they will not stop p2p sharing.

The RIAA's just in a fit because people naturally seek to bypass the outrageous prices set by the industry. I can sum it up in one word: Greed. How the hell am I supposed to hear a band's sound if I can't hear the songs? CD stores' sampling machines aren't always an option, since they often carry only whatever's "cool" at the time (which I usually look down upon). Some sites may have samples, but that could be the best/worst song on the album, leaving me with little understanding of it as a whole. If that "copyrighted material" is really good, and merchandise isn't overpriced (yeah right), I may even buy some stuff. If I don't like it, I'm obviously not going to let it on my computer and listen to it.

Ok so a quick math lesson.
There's 250 mil people in the US, aproximately.
250 of them were sued by the RIAA.
So you have a one in a million chance of being sued.
Compare that to your chances of being run over by a car this week.
Do you stop crossing the road?
Kazza might be brought down by this, but probbaly not, and even if they are there are plaenty of other peer to peer networks that are a lot better than Kazza for protecting your identity.
The Music industry went to shit years ago, they'll happily rip you off in a second and cry like babies when they get the shaft. For example, the unit cost of producing a DVD is far lower than the unit cost of producing a video casset, however the industry knows that because the quality is much higher and it's all new fangled technermological wizadry that you the punter will be all impressed and expect it to cost more, and far be it from them to dissapoint your expectations.
I used to work for a media reproduction company a few years ago, and the cost on CD's for a short run of 100 or so is quite high, but when your talking in the 100,000's then it's waaaay lower.
Games are a different kettle of fish tho, the development cost is way higher than for music and there's no box office recuipment like in the fil biz. However they could be cheaper too, but your high street store takes a 50% cut, the publisher takes a big chunk so the developer quite often barely breaks even, baring games like GT3 and so on. Don't bitch about companies like Westood going under if you have a chipped playstation and a stack of coppied titles. Your part of the problem.
