If you have a fallback belief for something, you are much less likely to adapt more knowledge or tolerance.
For example, if you start to look at your own abilities and credit your shortcomings for mental limitations, then you therefore will lose all your resolve to try and better yourself because you will start believing that you can never improve.
Religious folk see religion as their main way of life. In this case, it's their limitation. As such, they have no true desire to attempt learning the ways of the world and the universe not to mention the ways of other people.
In my opinion, that's a very selfish way of thinking; believing that as long as they commit to their religion, everything else in the world is secondary or beneath their appeal.
"If I follow my holy book, there is no reason for me accept these peons. Maybe I'll play along with them for my enjoyment, but when it comes right down to it, I'm the one who will be going to heaven after all."

I could rewrite your post and put in "science" or "scientific consensus" in the place of "religion" or "religious" and it would sound pretty similar.

There is a balance, though. It isn't just black and white.
I don't block out every scientific advance simply because I am religious; I just take it with a grain of salt. It isn't always "one is right and one is wrong."

Surth said "basically, deeply religious people are idiots", which is actually true- people so damn deep in their religion contribute pretty much nothing and only serve to become a stone in the way of progress.
Oh sure, there are exceptions, but exceptions don't define anything.
And if you're implying people deep into science are just as bad... just, no. I'd be inclined to agree that they're still shutting their minds off to other possibilities, but they still contribute and help the world progress. Deeply religious people do not.

How does one preach peace but then turn around and start war?
|
With that, you make the assumption that all or most Christians believe that the Crusades were valid/righteous/etc.

Why not?
A deeply religious person may simply believe, without doubt and with full certainty, that he should live to help others above himself. Is that not progress?
And what if a man believes in science so much that he performs research with its priority above human or animal life, or personal safety, trying to find an answer? Is that progress?

See how that sounds if you change a few key phrases around? You're targeting a group of people because you disagree with them, and see it as a binary issue. Either they're stupid and religious or they're not stupid and aren't religious.
Before someone hops in and says BUT AIRcRAFTKILLAR! U MUST BE TEH RELAGOIUS! I find most of modern Christianity to be abhorrent to the ideals of Christ. And I myself am not a shining example of how a Christian should act. It's one of many reasons why I try to avoid religious discussions, I don't like speaking about subjects where my weaknesses are obvious.
There are many "deeply religious" people who aren't idiots. Painting everyone with a broad brush is silly. You're smarter than that.
