The 'protest' against the Quran burning ended up destroying more Qurans than that Florida nitwit did.

If you have a fallback belief for something, you are much less likely to adapt more knowledge or tolerance.

For example, if you start to look at your own abilities and credit your shortcomings for mental limitations, then you therefore will lose all your resolve to try and better yourself because you will start believing that you can never improve.

Religious folk see religion as their main way of life. In this case, it's their limitation. As such, they have no true desire to attempt learning the ways of the world and the universe not to mention the ways of other people.

In my opinion, that's a very selfish way of thinking; believing that as long as they commit to their religion, everything else in the world is secondary or beneath their appeal.

"If I follow my holy book, there is no reason for me accept these peons. Maybe I'll play along with them for my enjoyment, but when it comes right down to it, I'm the one who will be going to heaven after all."

I could rewrite your post and put in "science" or "scientific consensus" in the place of "religion" or "religious" and it would sound pretty similar.

I don't think I said anything that gave the impression that I was all "pro-science."

I have absolutely no problem with people who are religious. The point I was trying to make was that it's possible for you to become so focused on what you believe to be 100% certain that you lose perspective of whatever else is going on in the world.

I centered the idea of my last post around religion because that's what this thread is about. But I purposely through a non-religious example in there to show that my point applies in many areas outside of religion.

I'm not trying to hate on religion or people that believe in it. Nor am I trying to categorize people who follow religions into a stereotype. I'm merely pointing out that if you tell yourself to start believing something, you eventually will and you will eventually limit yourself in the long run.

If there is some type of person I am against, it's the kind of person who purposely limits their understanding of others because of their own short sighted ambitions.

There is a balance, though. It isn't just black and white.
I don't block out every scientific advance simply because I am religious; I just take it with a grain of salt. It isn't always "one is right and one is wrong."

Oh, yes, of course. That goes without saying.

But have you ever seen those religious people who try to fight science with science? I remember seeing a video once where someone was trying to disprove the theory of evolution by claiming that life can miraculously develop inside a sealed jar of peanut butter.

There are people that will have opinions that transcend the notions of right and wrong. What they have spent their life focused on consumes them and becomes their primary truth. Everything else, right or wrong, is secondary and isn't really of any true importance to them.

Look at physical religious conflicts as an example. Each combatant becomes so obsessed with their beliefs that they cancel out their desire to tolerate the rest of the world. If Christianity is a religion about peace on Earth and good will towards other men, then why is it that there were so many religious crusades for Christianity in the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries? How does one preach peace but then turn around and start war?

This thread isn't about religion vs science, it's about the utter stupidity in burning a bunch of books to try and prove anything at all.

Yet people decided it was easier to oversimplify the issue by saying "everyone religious is an idiot". Which is obviously not the case. Believing in something that you do not is not an indication of intelligence or personal worth.

Surth said "basically, deeply religious people are idiots", which is actually true- people so damn deep in their religion contribute pretty much nothing and only serve to become a stone in the way of progress.

Oh sure, there are exceptions, but exceptions don't define anything.

And if you're implying people deep into science are just as bad... just, no. I'd be inclined to agree that they're still shutting their minds off to other possibilities, but they still contribute and help the world progress. Deeply religious people do not.

With that, you make the assumption that all or most Christians believe that the Crusades were valid/righteous/etc.

Why not?
A deeply religious person may simply believe, without doubt and with full certainty, that he should live to help others above himself. Is that not progress?
And what if a man believes in science so much that he performs research with its priority above human or animal life, or personal safety, trying to find an answer? Is that progress?

Oh sure, there are exceptions, but exceptions don't define anything.

And if you're implying that black people who act white are just as bad... just, no. I'd be inclined to agree that they're still shutting their minds off to other possibilities, but they still contribute and help the world progress. N1ggers do not.

See how that sounds if you change a few key phrases around? You're targeting a group of people because you disagree with them, and see it as a binary issue. Either they're stupid and religious or they're not stupid and aren't religious.

Before someone hops in and says BUT AIRcRAFTKILLAR! U MUST BE TEH RELAGOIUS! I find most of modern Christianity to be abhorrent to the ideals of Christ. And I myself am not a shining example of how a Christian should act. It's one of many reasons why I try to avoid religious discussions, I don't like speaking about subjects where my weaknesses are obvious.

There are many "deeply religious" people who aren't idiots. Painting everyone with a broad brush is silly. You're smarter than that.
