What do you think this device does? It looks like some kind of strobe / laser combination... but I'm probably off.

Something on the lines of a laser stun gun with low energy requirements?

Just looks like a device that painfully but temporarily blinds someone.

I don't know the specific function, but it appears to be similar to that of devices used tactically that emit laser or partical radiation that causes mental confusion, and can cause instantaneous vomitting and other symptoms. Such devices work because the brain cannot process the immediate flow; the vast quantity of particles/radiation emitted all at the same time. My speculation would be such a device could be used for interrogation purposes, but my speculation could be completely off. It doesn't look like something portable and convenient, and it has the appearance of a special use item; specific circumstance implied. It's difficult to tell from the image; more of a render then real-life photograph of the device. I don't think it would be a device that would cause temporary blindless or impaired vision. Wicked Lasers specializes in laser technology, and if I recall laser weaponry is a violation of the Geneva Convention and I doubt that it would be available to the public if this were the case.

I was thinking similar things. But what makes it hard is the fact that it says both "mobile" and "illumination" in its name.

Mobile means it's probably something hand-held (the tail end looks about the size of their normal lasers). Illumination means it probably has functionality to light up, identify or otherwise target an attacking force.

If it was to stun or induce vomiting, you'd think they would choose a better word than 'illumination'.

I suppose that would be a more practical explanation; illumination generally refers to the application of light. In that sense, it would not be practical to assume that it would function similar to that of a device array of light emitting diodes (or other); used to induce confusion in the brain, causing said symptoms. A strobing effect would not output the same results of such a device either. Speculating the previous I don't think it would be accurate to say it would emitt (or illuminate); partial radiation, either. The device would have to be relatively safe to be approved for distribution for civilian use, which would mean that it generally would not have any permanent or long-term effects assuming exposure was not long-term. I still speculate there is some form of laser radiation involved since that is Wicked Laser's field of work. I guess one would have to maybe study the effects of different types of light, and/or laser radiation to provide an accurate assumption on what this thing actually does, because not all forms of light are visible; there's much more science involved here.

There are too many possibilities to speculate though, and I know Wicked Laser's is having a contest, but if you want some advice in the right direction you should look into studying about electromagnetic radiation, directed-energy weapons, infrared radiation, and some other applications. My best guess at this point (because I don't care to speculate further); is that this device is a Dazzler.

Good luck.
