So I just bought Renegade again (since I lost the original copy and i'm a good boy  ) and now it wont let me log in!
I have read the stickys on here, and heres what I did:
Went into multiplayer
Advanced game listings
When asked to login, I entered a username and password of 8 characters long
Clicked login
Waited...
'Cannot login, operation timed out.'
Opened up all renegade ports in router + firewall, same outcome
Thanks alot for any help 
Edit:
Don't worry, I figured it out now I was using an underscore, and when I removed it, it let me login...so I guess you cant use anything but alphanumerics?
