also, the opposition is willing to try and talk out a compromise, but he pretty much will only listen to stuff that agrees with him; everything else is shot down and ignored...

plus, given America's track record, I don't think giving more power to the government is such a great idea.

He's been trying to cater to people on all sides of the spectrum because he's been trying to present himself as a bi-partisan politician. Yes, he could ram it through, but then the Republican party and independents would view it as a liberal, socialist, unionist ploy to expand government. I suppose that attitude hasn't really changed, but you can't blame him for trying.

Frankly, I can't blame him for giving up on a compromise with the right/right-of-center because the rhetoric by those in the 'tea parties' and on talk radio is so toxic, and unproductive. When you've got people in crowds calling Obama some really bad things, and likening health care to Armageddon, you know it's not worth your time to negotiate with them. Obama's put out an olive branch, and kept it there, seeking moderation in the debate. But instead of sitting down to talk, they're just screaming louder and louder, likening his overtures as being indecisive.

As for the big government argument. Yes it's true that health care will expand government's reach. But here's the thing that confuses me - why isn't Glenn Beck crying about the ginormous reach that Bush gave the US government after Sept. 11th? Forget the bailouts, and other initiatives, and just look at the new Department of Homeland security, and the increased jurisdiction of other agencies; those likely intrude into people's lives more than health care.

Yes preventing terrorism is important. But what's more dangerous to America? A nutjob who thinks he's really damaging the 'Great Satan' or a previously middle class family that is facing bankruptcy because they're paying bills for health care?
