Tips for FDS LAN?

It never showed up in LAN list so I was using Renegade log name joiner to connect to IP and all of the sudden it stopped working on multiple computers...

Says Testing bandwidth
Then Joining game

and then faded out on the top of screen says connection interupted in green like you see in game.

Would have posted this in server owners but got kicked out Very Happy
Thanks

Umm, you have to use direct connect, to connect to lan. I highly doubt that westwood/ea games really thought about the LAN.

I'm not sure but when using hamachi when u go into someone elses lan if that works tho.

@ Zion, pretty good, trying to learn iPhone SDK now, its the craziest language.

@ Goztow, Its disabled, and I cant even direct connect to my own computer...

What does does everyone use for direct connect? I didnt realize till yesterday it was just execute parameters... You must just be able to create a shortcut to connect to an IP?

Im using Windows 7 with XP SP3 compatability for the FDS/Ren, it was working fine and all of the sudden it stopped connecting...

E: Do you think it has something to do with Win7? Has someone else run LAN FDS on 7?

Extremely strange. I have fixed it, it must have been some glitch in the FDS: It affected multiple computers and multiple operating systems.

After several more tests, I found I had two computer with the same problem, couldnt connect to FDS LAN, but the FDS worked fine on WOL.

Even after installing a new FDS in a different directory and testing it did not connect.

I deleted the RenegadeFDS REGISTRY folder and that did the trick. I do not know why this fixed it but it worked on multiple computers on Win XP & Win 7.

I guess an FDS uninstall would have fixed it because it should delete the reg key that was screwed up... I do not know which key it was but it must have been something with the IP address.

Cheers!

There may have been a key which was restricting the ability to work under LAN, but i'm not sure without seeing the keys.

And yes, Objective C is quite extreme.

Yes, but the glitch happens in straight Win XP SP3 as well. I do not know how to recreate it either.

My guess is that it was actually a networking error, a bad (networking) switch, that both computers were plugged into. I noticed the switch was a little wierd, i.e. some ports didnt work, link lights were flashing on ports with no computer, etc.

If you have multiple network devices it could simply be that the FDS was only listening on a particular device instead of the default setting of listening to all... could explain why you couldn't even connect from the same machine.

Which would happen if it was listening on a network device which has no cable plugged into it, for instance a second ethernet port.

That setting is stored in the registry?

Where because that might happen again, when I try and host via ethernet. (Regularly I use wireless)

Software->Westwood->RenegadeFDS->Networking->Options

The PreferredLanNic setting in here is the most likely culprit if that is indeed the case. (NOTE: NIC means Network Interface Device, not nickname)

Could a failure for this option to change automatically be caused by a network error? i.e. a bad network switch

Also how would I manually switch them if it gets jammed again? Its hex. lol

Just delete the key and it will get recreated next time the FDS loads. It might not be that key at fault, it just seems to be the most likely cause.

I couldnt connect, couldnt connect.. and I delete the renegadefds registry folder and it connects again on multiple computers. It must be that key. It worked fine yesterday when I switched network devices. Thanks for the help!
