Ok, I did some Google searching awhile back and my vid card (Mobile Intel GFX Media Accelerator X3100) supposedly supports up to 1600x1200 on a secondary monitor. But in the options it says otherwise.

So, is what I found true? Or can my laptop support higher resolutions?

cant say about your card but I had many problems with setting up my dual screens decently when I switched to win7.

Just want to add that you shouldn't run your monitor on any other than its natural resolution to keep quality Smile

edit: typo

Really? It seemed really simple to me. Maybe it's because I had Vista and you didn't? It seems to be exactly the same. And why wouldn't I run it on the monitor's native resolution? It would be blurry if I set it to a lower resolution, and it doesn't accept signals higher than 1280x1024.

So can anybody else answer my question about the vid card? I'm assuming the options are only there because that's the highest resolution at the time the OS was last updated, but I'm not sure because I would buy a bigger monitor if Google lied to me.

Also, while this topic is up, is this a good monitor? I'm not looking for a super-sweet monitor, I just want it to get the job done while still being OK for gaming and has to be cheap.

I'm sorry mate, I had a typo there: meant you shouldn'T run Blush

The problems I had were related to displaylink stuff and individual desktop wallpapers for each

Anyway: I think those displayed resolutions on windows settings will change once you installed your screen.
However, it seems you will not use any higher resolution anyway. 1440x900 if you get a normal 19'' widescreen. As said: i dont know your vid card but it probably cant handle much more (especially for gaming)

All GFX cards now n days can support 2048*1536 and beyond (DVI). However just cos it can display it doesnt mean it will work well. It will run out of steam at around 1280*1024.

Well, mine isn't dvi it's vga. My gfx card is also two or more years old. What do you mean 'out of steam?'

Yeah it will still display 2048*1536 with VGA. What I mean buy out of steam is that it will display a still image at that resolution so technically it can display it however if you tried to run something that was GPU intensive it wouldn't work very well at the resolution. You would get very low FPS. Its more suited to run at 1280*1024

Alright, I'll stick with 1280x1024 then, thanks.

Can you tell me anything about this monitor? For comparison, I'm borrowing this monitor from my desktop right now. The Acer one is really cheap and it looks like a lot better quality then my current Dell one. Also, my laptop is Acer, and the color is pretty desaturated. Do you think I'll have this problem with the monitor?

The monitor you're looking at seems to be ok. Personally I would find one with a DVI port for better colours but thats just me being picky. Its much better then the one you're currently using. You shouldnt have any problems with saturation or the lack of it. If you do you can always increase it in the settings.

Alright, well I found this one. It's cheap, and has a DVI port for future use. The specs seem to better than this Dell monitor too. Should I just buy this one instead of the Acer?

Well as I cant see what this one is I really cant give advice. Your x3100 should have DVI ports anyways so I dont understand for future use?

Lol sorry. I completely forgot to add the link. Here's the one I was talking about. It seems like it comes with a lot of stuff.

If you have the money I'd say go for a larger monitor, at least 20" imo, I love my 20" monitor I got in October which is the LG W2053TQ-PF, it supports DVI also.

I would consider it, but I don't have much room to work with seeing as how my primary screen is a laptop. I have a 17" already for my desktop, and it's already big enough for me.

Yeah either of those monitors will do the job. I would personally choose the one with DVI as mentioned before but if you just want a nice montior then either would suit.
