Well, the difference is whether you want to respect Westwood's wishes or EA's. Westwood made Renegade, and EA owns the rights to it at the moment.
Regardless of which forums are official or not, I don't think anyone can argue which of the two has the most content and the most traffic for people who still play the game or are interested in it.
