We are VERY VERY excited to announce the official launch of a brand new website! We have rebuilt everything from the ground up to effectively use modern technologies like CSS, AJAX, MVC, and JQuery! (It's ok if you don't know what those stand for!)

So, take a look around, and report any bugs you find in our forums.

I want to extend my huge everlasting thanks to andr3w282, our Director of Information Technology, for doing 99.9% of the work in getting this new site up and running! This is a project that has been about a year in the making and thousands of lines of code!

The new site is also fully integrated into the FUDForum software to eliminate problems we had in the past with the users from the main site and the forums going out-of-sync. Now they share the same data for a more seamless user experience.

Our main goal was to recreate all the features from n00bstories 1.0, which we have accomplished. There are several new features you will discover, and more improvements to be made in the future, now that we have a better base.

Welcome to a new era for n00bstories.com!!

SHAMELESS SELF ADVERTISING! You should ban yourself!

Serious: Looks pretty cool. A bit too uh... gray, though. But otherwise, good job.

Got a bug report... at least in Chrome when you go to the image gallery, every time you hover over one of your images it pops up like a preview thing... that is stretched to hell and back... and again... Probably not intended to work like that methinks. Razz

FUD Forums ftw! Looks good.

Not really. Just about most other stuff out there tops it, although it is a very simple and stable forum software.

As for this change, there's good things and bad things.

First of all, Good job getting rid of the standard FUD Forum look on the forums. That's one of the biggest things I dislike about it (and this site). The main site also doesn't have the old fashioned look anymore either.

Now, for the bad. There's two things that strike me as obvious.

Despite the more modern approach with the style, I still do not like the new look, namely the color scheme (Grey, Grey, and more Grey, and there's even Grey text on a Grey backdrop). It's very monotonous, boring, and unoriginal (I'm referring to the look, not the site itself, of course). Overall, it's alot less recognizable and original, even if it doesn't look so old fashioned and has alot of new features.

Secondly, it appears it's not supportive of 1024x768? You need a 1280 width to see the whole page horizontally without scroll bars. While 1280x1024, 1680x1050, and countless others are becoming more modern, 1024x768 still has the largest amount of users. It's easy to think anything below 1280xwhatever doesn't exist when you've had a 1680x1050 screen for a few years, but the web is a different place. Also, many users with larger screens don't run their browser window full size (like me, which is how I noticed this about the site). I really question this move. Do sample the resolution of the visitors to your site, if you can, and use that to judge. You really won't even be able to judge that as it relies on Javascript to work, and not everyone has that/enabled that. If it's not in the low single digits (1024x768 views), you can't assume the use of it on your site is extinct, and should therefore make the site be supportive of it. From a design standpoint, this is a large mistake.

http://www.hobo-web.co.uk/tips/25.htm

P.S. I'm linking to that for the article itself, not the figures for the resolutions. Note that the figures there are for their site only. For others, 1024x768 use may even be ~50%, and for others, it may be even less than theirs.

Overall, I think the look is a letdown, and not supporting the single largest resolution in use is a bit of a surprise, but I can understand why the revamp was done, and outside those two things, everything else looks to be better.

Great new site. I was used to the old one as it was like that for a few years now, but this looks great. Keep it up!

Thanks to my Google Analytics I know that our visitors are less than 15% using a resolution lower than 1280 pixels wide.

Moved to the community forum.

Launching a new website is never easy. The template could indeed use with a little bit more colour. And FUDforum Sad. My thoughts about it as a forum software package are well known Razz.

Overall a job well done, though! I know first hand how hard it is to create and launch a new design. I'm sure it'll even improve in the coming weeks Smile.

to be really honest, the site doesnt look to good.
This website makes me think im back in 2001 using photoshop 4 or something. Today websites are more aerodynamic.
for example the game-maps website.

It's good you were one step ahead, but 15% is still quite a good percentage (and again, that doesn't take into account those with a larger resolution who use a smaller browser window, nor those who don't have javascript enabled). Gaming communities often have larger monitors/resolutions, so you may get away with that here. I wouldn't be surprised if ~1/5 of your users are having to deal with the horizontal scroll bar though.

I noticed my last post seemed to be doing nothing but bashing the site, but that wasn't my intent. Among all of the "looks good" posts, I figured I'd offer some critique.

Good luck with your site. I know firsthand that running one is way more than alot of people imagine.
