I'm sure a lot of you are aware of Time Warner capping internet downloads for a couple of cities. Time Warner only did this in Beaumont, Texas, and will expand to Austin and San Antonio, Texas and Rochester, N.Y. this summer. The service will roll out in four tiers, starting at $29.95 for 5GB per month, up to $54.90 for 40GB.

Not that this applies to me or most of you directly, but this is a pretty bad sign that internet providers will soon start robbing us of our money by setting expensive downloading caps.

Charter (the internet provider I use) has a large caps of 250 gb and 100 gb, and Comcast has 250 gb, which really isn't a problem for those of us who don't download 2 or 3 large torrents over-night every night, but I have a feeling that this will eventually lead to "pay per gb", where internet providers will be charging you money for every gb you download.

Knowing you, much like me, love to play games. Not only games, but online games which can often involve a lot of internet usage. There's a petition for Time Warner to stop this, and even though few of you use Time Warner, I think it would be a good idea to sign this petition so other companies will find out that this is a bad idea. http://www.petitiononline.com/UHSICP01/petition.html

By the way, I found out about this by reading an article at DVICE, http://dvice.com/archives/2009/04/time_warner_cab.php

On the other hand, why should I pay high rates to subsidize heavy downloaders, when I use little bandwidth in comparison?

Hmmm and I thought the 60GB cap I had was fail enough Rocked Over
People in the US should just be glad most of your ISPs still have no caps while it seems all Canadian ISPs have caps other than the odd small one, Australia has it worse I've heard.

Time Warner obviously feels threatened by the internet taking away business from their cable services, and has decided to fuck everyone over as a response. 40GB a month for fifty dollars? What a fucking joke. In today's world with things like online gaming, downloadable/streaming HD content, and other products 40GB is a completely illogical limit to slap on their customers. I'd be willing to bet that they'll lose a lot of business for this decision. I know if my ISP ever tried shit like this, I'd be cancelling my account in seconds. In conclusion, Time Warner can eat a dick.

It's times like this when I'm very tempted to go build a wok-fi or a cantenna and leech off of the University's ample bandwith... but, then again, Verizon hasn't tried a download cap.

Yet.

I don't pay $30 a month to get shafted, and they already deliver 2/3 of the bandwidth they advertised, so at any given moment I'm ->one<- changed policy away from dropping my service. I've become very intolerant of not getting my money's worth out of ISPs, cable companies, phone companies, etc. If you can't produce results, you don't deserve to stay in business.

I pay 42.50 euro or so for 25 GB. It used to be 42.50 for 12 GB a while ago. That really sucked. :/ And I called once to my provider what would change if I wanted to go lower, and that was 1 GB for 30 euros. Now it's 30 euros for 4 GB.

Then again: there are alternatives in Belgium, though they're not as well known and usually offer a less good service (read: you need to know a bit about a home network, routers, ...). Check xs.be .

Wow, and to think that unlimited bandwidth broadband was a norm in this age...
The ISPs in my country only offer unlimited broadband, but then again, that could be because my country is very very small (understatement).

The purpose of this thread is to prevent other providers, even providers in your country, to start capping downloads. Just putting the blame on America again isn't going to do shit.
