Keep it XP, and make sure it's updated using Windows update.

Then download Firefox, and grab AVG Antivirus. Get AVG updated, and scanning on a daily basis, and it should be no problem.

I'd upgrade the RAM though, if she has a bit of money to spare to at least 1GB.

Upgrading that computer would be a very bad idea, Vista with less than 2GB(1.5GB minimum probably) is hell and another fact: Vista + a laptop = slow.

Not really. Vista's good, but for her needs, XP will do the job just fine. Buying Vista would just be a waste of money, and time.

Keep XP. Vista eats too much RAM. It needs 1GB minimum just for basic use.

And don't use AVG anti-virus. I used to use it... it's a good program, but it hogs a lot of memory and slows down your computer to a crawl.

Best free anti virus I ever found and I use it today, is Avast home edition, and it is FREE.

Avast imo doesn't do that good of a job, but now that I use Nod32 I think all other Anti-Viruses are bad so don't listen to me if you don't want to.

I use it on my netbook, and it's OK. The speed decrease is noticeable, but then again, the inconvenience offsets the possible shitstorm that occurs when you get a virus.

Word, Nod32 > Kaspersky > ALL.

And yeah, stick with XP unless you got no other choice but to upgrade.

The wpa2 TKIP is the strongest connect you can get, unless you go ahead and code your one. Which you can do I might add.

Please start making more readable sentences. I'm getting a headache reading your questions.

Try connecting it without security first.

Install filseclab firewall, it fucking owns.

Btw,
XP is way better then Vista, why do you think, that they already start making windows 7.0 ?
Vista was a flop, and every experienced desktop user knows it.

On a better computer, Vista is amazing in some ways. My friend and I decided to test and compare on his spare computer. The most noticable difference with Vista is file transfer time. It took 3 hours to copy about 10gig onto his External using XP, but Vista took less than 45 minutes. I was amazed.

But yes, for 90% of people, Vista sucks. And I use XP.

I should choose for XP. I have VISTA also but that is because Halo 2 won't work on XP. That's only why i have VISTA installed Big Grin

And for Anti-Virus i would take Nod32 or AVG Big Ups

Funny how you notice that, I noticed the File transfer rate was slower than XP and my low spec(much lower than my Vista computer) is in a many ways much faster than my Vista computer.

That doesn't have much to do with the OS...

Different hard drives have different transfer times, not to mention the type of connection it uses is also a factor in it's transfer speed. (PATA / SATA).

If you simply used a "spare computer" it was likely to have an older model Hard drive with a lower RPM than that of a more modern one.
