Politics aside, what are your personal feelings on the study and practice of human genetic augmentation?

I think it's a necessary step for the human race. I also think that people are just way too paranoid about it. With proper supervision noone will be doing anything they shouldn't be doing. Curing diseases is probably one of the most important reasons I'm a supporter of it. Sooner or later people are going to start with it anyway, whether those people are "good" or "bad" depends on politics, but hey, we weren't talking about that here.

The way I see it is that genetics should only be altered to prevent diseases from forming and to (this a personal irrelevant interest) invent and introduce new and unique appearances into the gene pool (If that is at all possible.)

Something like new colors in eyes or hair, or something simple like that.

It should never be used to change/edit/manipulate a persons physical or mental capabilities and personal limits. Doing so will only cause horrible and strict restrictions on the freedom of people. (For example, getting certain jobs or achieving certain goals, and things like that).

What I mean by that is no:
-Height manipulation
-Strength manipulation
-Mental manipulation
-Gender manipulation
Or anything else like that that could cause someone to have any pre-set advantages over someone else or throw off the balance of society. Simply visual appearances should be allowed to be fixed or augmented.

You just reminded me of the movie Gattaca.

I agree with R315r4z0r, but for maybe those other augments on secret agents with black coats and glowing eyes that go by names like J.C Denton.

Yeah, I've been playing too much Deus Ex.

If we make a change, it'll probably have an unexpected (negative?) effect.

There could be that problem, but I think it would be cool to have like gold eyes, or dark green or violet hair.

Get colour lenses or dye your hair...

I support therapies like stem-cell research that could cure cancers, and help people with diseases like MS.

But creating people is simply wrong. It will only widen the disparity between rich and poor, where the wealthy will have children that will be 'perfect' , whereas the middle, and working class will have children that will see themselves as inferior. That will create a lot of social ills.

I find women who are "perfect" with plastic looking skin ,an orange tan and humongous breasts very very unattractive. I have also found that most of their attitude's matched their looks. Disgusting.

So I think genetic research to *change*, but not *select* physical properties is bad. I say select them is ok because there is no genetic modifications, so all the imperfections are there.

I do support stem-cell research, in fact, I don't see why anyone could oppose it really. In any case, stem-cells can already cure type 2 diabetics and help those who have suffered brain damage.

My position exactly.

I should add that I am studying biology and one small change anywhere can have more effects than you realise - the body uses the same chemicals in different places for different things - this is why drugs have side effects, I think changing these proteins will cause problems.

Also, to clarify: When I say allow for visual look augmentation, I only mean things that, to put it one way, aren't "competitive." Purely visual, which is why I referenced hair and eyes, also why I said no to height manipulation.

Things like hair and eye color aren't the kinds of things that cause commotion and disagreements over. How often do you see someone die hard jealous over someone's hair color compared to other things? (Among other physical features on the body that others tend to like/dislike certain ways).

Anything that isn't purely visual shouldn't be touched. That goes for physical and mental abilities as well, like I already said. (Augmenting those would only cause problems in society.)

Also, to Reborn when he questioned me saying artificially engineered being natural:
Natural, as in, you are born with it and that is your default look.

The way I see it, it makes no difference if the way you look occurred naturally in life the point is, you look the way you look for whatever reason.
