They believed that the Second Coming would happen in their generation. Why doesn't it seem that this has any implications?

This begs the question... does Jesus have a 2000+ year refractory period? It's 2009, and people are STILL waiting for the dude's Second Coming.

It's because of verses like these:

"But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come." (Matthew 10:23)

"Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who shall not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom" (Matthew 16:28)

I bet he didn't even come back once and was simply still alive after what happened to him, however unlikely as that may sound.

And if that's the case, he never rose from the dead, but rather rose from a rather horrid state of unconsciousness.

I don't know.. I'm totally ignorant when it comes to religion. I don't know the difference between a Bible and a dictionary.

Anyone got some christian debate on this? The Wikipedia article just acknowledges that they thought the second coming would come in their lifetime and that "generation" isn't mistranslated as "race".

Viva la Resistance!
Anyone claiming themselves to be the son of god and that he is the second coming would be seen as insane.

People that aren't christian would think he's just pure insane, and christians would just think he is taking the mick and certainly not believe him.

He wont come, it's just a ploy to get people to "behave" themselves. Because everyone knows how chaotic the world would become if people couldn't believe in imaginary forces that have answers to everything...

If an atheist worshiped Satan, then they wouldn't be an atheist... now would they?

For them to believe Satan exists, they would have to believe God exists and therefore wouldn't be considered an atheist..

well, wouldn't the stars and planets all have to align to form a huge majical star like when Christ was born, and wouldn't God have to have un married sex with another young Jewish woman?

If you believe in Christianity's God, and believe the bible, then you must concede that God is at least as old as Earth is, as he was supposed to of made it. According to the Bible, the Earth is roughly 6000 years old, meaning that God is aged between 6000 years - infinity.
Given this, he may prefer an older woman.

Older... no one better start holding their breath if we are going to wait for a woman older then god to come along to give birth to give birth to Christ.

Old men, after they reach a certain "break point" age, tend to prefer younger women.

Haven't you ever heard the phase "Dirty old man?"

It's interesting the age of the woman is mentioned, since there is an argument that 'virgin' is simply a mistranslation of 'young woman' (in the same vein, the 72 'virgins' promised to Islamic suicide-murderers is thought to be a mistranslation for grapes... which, again, makes a little more sense and is a lot less condescending to Muslim women 'hi girls, if you have sex you aren't going to heaven, and if you stay a virgin all your life you'll go to heaven but only for the comfort and convenience of a man).

If that is the case, then the original prophecy is a lot less remarkable and a lot more plausible. Also, perhaps a Christian can point out where in the Bible Jesus says his mother was a virgin. I asked that question before, no answer yet.

Man, I can get like, a billion raisins for about five bucks at Costco. 72 raisin's for your life?! That's horrible, you need at least 6 dozen just to make a decent batch of cookies.

is it surprising that the price is so low? religion has always taught that we humans are miserable sinners who only exist to worship the dictator (no Kim Jong-Il or Stalin could put it better). but take heart, because the beauty of life all around us and of non-living things in the cosmos... was all created specifically with us in mind.

bit of a contradiction.

Any Muslims here wanna comment on the 72 virgins business (assuming it actually does mean 'virgin', as most Muslims seem to believe). To my knowledge, the only mention of women in the Muslim version of heaven is the 72-virgins concept. This seems to imply two things.
1. Women who have sex aren't going to heaven, even if they live a virtuous life. This seems to be not only extremely repressive, but also quite harmful to the survival of the human species - after all, Islam does instruct its follows to spread Islam everywhere and anywhere, so...
2. Those women who take heed of point 1 and remain a virgin all their life might end up going to heaven, but only for the comfort and convenience of a man; only as little more than a sex slave. The 72-virgins scenario does rather indicate that the women will have very little choice in the matter; most likely the man would have the complete choice of which of his many virgins to use, and when, and how often.

So, my Muslim friends, question: do you think any of this is good? Aren't you as repelled by this as I am? I can only guess as to how condescending all this is to women (as is so much else in Islam); I also find it pretty damn condescending to men, too. Am I supposed to be tempted by the above deal? Is it supposed to make me want to give my life in the service of Allah, as it does for so many suicide bombers all over the world all the time?
