Quote: | On Friday, January 9, 2009, Microsoft will make the Windows 7 Beta and the Windows Server 2008 R2 Beta available to the public via four different locations on Microsoft.com, each of which is oriented towards a different customer type. I don't have exact URLs yet, but suffice to say that the download availability will be obvious. I will update this article when possible with specific download links.

Another quote from the same link just for laughs
Quote: | And if you're not willing or able to install the Windows 7 Beta on a real PC--remember, Virtual PC is for sissies*--then fear not, I'll continue my in-depth examinations of this product for some time to come.

* That's a joke. I'm sure you're not really a sissy.

EDIT2: I found some more download links these ones work:

Well since it's been circulating the torrents for a while anyway they might as well release an official one to the public. Whether it will be the build 7000 that is currently circulating or a later build remains to be seen, but I suspect it will be a later build.
I may download it just to get a first hand look at Win7 (and no, I don't intend to do that by getting a leaked version), but if I do it will be in Virtual PC, I have no inclination to install a beta copy in a dual boot configuration.

Ugh. andr3w282 called it, I guess.
Anyways, just so you know, Windows 7 was actually meant to be the successor to XP, but then they decided to just go for Vista for whatever reason.
Be happy though, I hear Windows 7 is alot more stable. Or do you simply want Windows to keep making shitty OS's?

Well that's stupid: they took it down
EDIT: Ok I think I've found out why they took it down(two possible reasons, after googling a bit ):
Quote: | January 9, 2009
Today, on Friday, January 9, 2009, Microsoft will make the Windows 7 Beta available to the general public as a free ISO download from its Web site. As I write this, it's early in the morning, but the download could become available as early as 9:00 am EST, and since Microsoft is making only 2.5 million copies available, my advice is to download it as early as possible if you are interested. In an earlier briefing, the company told me that there would be four main portals for the download on their site, each based around a different kind of customer, but I think it's safe to say that the main Windows 7 site is the place to check. Get that downloading finger ready, people. Here it comes.
|
Source: http://www.winsupersite.com/events/ces2009.asp down a bit under "Here comes the Windows 7 public Beta".
So according to that they were only allowing 2.5 million copies to be downloaded, now everyone go show how mad you are at Microsoft.
According to this link: http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/01/09/windows-7-public-beta-released-remember -to-patch
It is 2.5 Million Product Keys for the beta not 2.5 Million Copies.
Another reason: http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-10138921-75.html
EDIT2: I found some more download links these ones work:
Windows 7 x86 (32bit) | Windows 7 x64 (64 bit)
Download before these ones are taken down.
I got these from here: http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/01/09/windows-7-public-beta-released-remember -to-patch

I was able to get a product key from Microsoft (first link) with no problem. However, whenever I click "Download", the page loading bar in Firefox goes up all the way, and then nothing comes up. I don't get no error or busy messages or anything. I'm downloading from the other link, since I got the product key from Microsoft anyway.

Lone0001 wrote on Sat, 10 January 2009 13:47 | Just fyi if you guys haven't noticed yet the original download link is working again, I suggest using it, I had some problems with the 2nd one I don't know about anyone else but I did.
| Before I proceed, was this problem just with downloading, or something with the version they have? I just downloaded the x64 version, and basically maxed out my connection speed (downloaded at 700Kb/s), and it took about an hour and a half or so. Everything seemes fine so far, but before I burn it and try, it was just with the downloading itself, and not the version they have, right?

I can't wait for the other shoe to drop and make all of the early adopters regret wanting to try out the pretty shiny "new" OS so soon. On the other hand, I must salute those brave souls because they're the reason all the major flaws will be found and (probably) dealt with by the time I'm forced to make the switch several years hence. By which I mean "hopefully never."
