I've been smoking 2-3 packs a day for the past two years and only recently have I been coughing so I had to switch to lights.
I doubt its that, plus I've been around secondhand smoke all my life too.
perhaps something asthma related? Otherwise I dunno.

Heh, lights! Razz

I don't smoke them for my health (well sorta) I smoke them because regular cigarettes make me cough, lights don't.

Maybe it's dust from the PC, if you spend allot of time on the computer at your home, and it's in a poorly ventilated area with an old PC, then possibly the dust inside might be causing your irritated throat. Maybe Huh

maybe you started coughing ages ago for a reason, but then got so used to it that when the cause went away you sub-consciously continue doing it deliberatly. Drink some water wheny ou're about to do it?

Either way, its best to stay away from smokers and not even start smoking yourself.

Good luck with your condition though.

Yes start like the rest of us.

Me to have been smoking for a while and been going for menthol to lights to reg and so on.

Maybe it's god's will that you start smoking i mean your family does it right?

Just throwing this out there...

Has there ever been a time that you might have inhaled something organic by accident? Small grass blade, any kind of wood particle, any kind of organic debris? If I remember right, plant/wood/hair, etc doesn't typically show up on cat-scans/x-rays. Least not on the lungs. But I dunno. I haven't had any kind of anatomy/biology class since I was 12. :S

I've heard that there was a girl with really bad breath most of her life, but tests proved nothing. Had her lungs checked and they found a needle from a christmas pine she had accidentally inhaled years ago. Was still green.

Then again, you said this was the result of a flu, so that's just that much more improbable.

Maybe try taking some Allegra or Claritin to see if it might be an allergy to something in your home (dust, mold, pet, etc).

Also you can try Mucinex (with lots lots lots of water) to clear out any phlegm that might be loose in your system causing the caughing.

It doesn't have to be pets or dust or mold, there could be a plant or flower nearby that you're allergic to. There is all kinds of plantlife that grows where we can't even see it. Have you been to an allergist?

Believe it or not, when I was in 7th grade, I had the exact same problem. I got a minor cough one day and it just didn't go away. I would cough really hard every few minutes or when I got excited, I just couldn't shake it. My friends caught on eventually and started poking fun at me, but not like in a mean way.. more of from a joking stand point.

Anyway, it lasted me for months and months. There was no reason for me to be coughing either. I didn't do anything to provoke it or anything. It started to stain my throat and it began to hurt really badly. However, oddly enough, after suffering through this intense cough for months on end, I had finally stopped when I had surgery done to remove a double hernia.

Don't ask me how, in any way, shape, or form, that my cough had to do with my hernia (other than maybe causing the hernia)... but once I had the surgery, the cough never returned to haunt me again.

That was just over 6 years ago. That's not to say I haven't gotten coughs every now and again since then, but I never went back into the violent one I was talking about earlier.

I don't know if that helps or not... I just thought I would share my experience on the matter.

I recommend getting a 'pin-prick' test. Basically, stick a bunch of needles into your back, each tipped with an allergen, and a gauge to measure swelling. I know, sounds fun, right? Was well worth it, though. I had no idea I was allergic to a type of fungus that grows in hay-bales, and they were all around our property.

However, there is another possibilty. Could be Reactive Airway Disease. A severe flu might have intensified it; even if it was never a problem before. Hope that isn't the case. If it is, it may also be aggrivated by chlorine.

Anyone else notice his thread is getting kinda 'House-y?' http://www.apathbeyond.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/emot-v.gif Bah, sorry. Lost the serious.

Oh, was also told that if you by any chance live in a trailor, might be irritations due to formaldahyde (really?).

Hmm... now that I think of it, I got a killer URI about a year ago, and kept coughing months after stuff was coming up. I loaded up on b12 and ate extremely spicy crap (mostly habanero ramen and wasabi) for a month, and it went away.

I'm starting to agree with the other guy about it being a subconscious thing, though...

When my grandmother was young, she had a severe bout of Bronchitis. She has had a benign, chronic cough ever since.

You may have a chronic cough. It's definitely treatable, but I don't think it's curable.
