With a girl in the background like that, not only my laptop would be overheating.
Experience tells me that laptop's arent made for gaming on the long haul. Components are smaller and stuck up on eachother, but they still generate the same heat as a normal PC.
Have you tried running Prime95? or Orthos? See if it still over heats

The value of a cooling pad cannot be overstated- even the cheapest POS cooler will help. Some of the better ones have USB hubs in them, too- but if you get a combo cooler/hub try to find one with its own power supply as running it off USB will actually compound the overheating problem (and possibly cause your power adapter to overheat as well). You can also elevate the whole assembly to provide more space under the cooling mat, which helps a little too.
If you're really desperate for cooling, take a small desk fan and aim it over the top of the computer from the side so that the airflow hits both the top and underside of the laptop equally. This will actually work better than most cooling pads, and is lots cheaper (since even the best desk fans are ~$5) but it's noisier. I actually used to do this with a desktop that had chronic overheating problems, and the addition of the desk fan (sitting on top of the case, no less) put an end to it right away. It works even better with laptops. Most fans won't take up too much space, either- no more than your average external hard drive.
Right now I use both- the cooling pad stays on all the time, and I flip on the desk fan if I'm running something really intense. The thing never even gets warm to the touch now.

Doitle wrote on Tue, 20 May 2008 21:15 | Do you have a cooling pad for it? Both of my room mates had to get them for their laptops. one of them bought a crappy one for like 15$ the other went all out and bought the Zalman one and the Zalman one was just soooo nice. Both of their laptops stopped overheating then though.

That is what I recomend.

Wallpaper link?
Yep, some of the 8000 series graphics (besides 8800s) in laptops have been known to be faulty and/or overheat. It's cost nVidia alot and has been at the forefront of the headlines since discovered, and if your laptop is still covered under warranty, see if you can have it replaced since it's obviously having thermal problems. Mention that you're aware of the faulty 8400 and 8600 graphics problems in laptops and that yours is overheating and failing. That should get you it replaced, hopefully with one that's not part of the batch that had problems. Otherwise, even if you lowered the temperature a bit now, it may only get worse later after the warranty has expired. They may be hesitant, but your PC that you pout your money into that is covered under their warranty (if it is) is failing and you want your currently faulty hardware replaced with ones that do not have the problem, so if you persist, you should be able to get a replacement since you deserve one. Good luck.
Edit: Cursed old topics! Either way, still have that wallpaper link?
