I've been building my own PC for years. Out of all the computers I've built, I've never done the "trendy" thing and put a light inside the case. But this time, the particular case that I liked had a window, and I figured, "Why not? I'll spend the $10 for a cathode light ftw."

I was so proud of my baby:

Then, last week I discovered the biggest reason not to put a light in your case.

I left my computer running unattended for about 3 days while I handled real-world stuff.

When I returned it was making a terrible screeching noise.

Upon closer inspection, it was filled with... BUGS! Yes, all sorts of flying insects were attracted by the light and several had become victims of the various fans inside.

Can you say FAIL?

That's a problem easily solved... mount a bug zapper light near but not next to your computer. As an added benefit, you can watch the lousy insects fry during loading screens.

Or, y'know, never leave your computer on when you're not using it.

Not an option - It's running a fileserver for the house and media server for all the TVs.

Southern California with no A/C means windows and doors must be left open. Somehow the bugs get indoors even when they're closed though. BUGS = WIN.

  |

Filters installed on the fans, but there are all kinds of little holes on the back of the case that a bug can squeeze through if they put their little mind to it.

What's up ACK? Nice to see you're still around here!

Yeah, DDR3... Haven't actually tested the HD performance, but I'll do that. The reason for the Raid 5 is for capacity + a small amount of redundancy... If I wanted performance I'd get a drive based on flash memory!

So for the quick update, I've disconnected the cathode light and now it's not a problem anymore. Now they just flock to my glowing mouse pad.
