Okay, so imagine this. You're running a Mac, and you devote a seperate partition of your hard drive to Windows XP Home so you can boot an OS to operate games on. You get Windows XP working and discover, to your shock, that Renegade will not install, the computer citing a problem with setup.exe, and an error report that you can choose to send to some anonymous recipient.

Now, faced with this problem, I reasoned that, if the CD drive is making all sorts of funky clicks and whirrs while I try to use it, then it might be a problem with how MacBooks CD drives work. So my solution is to download a copy of the game disks in ISO format (With the plan to use my own CD key in the installation. Does that make it piracy?), then mount them as virtual drives from which I can then successfully install the game.

But, lo and behold, it still does not work. Setup.exe crashes right when I try to load it, and nothing's going to solve that problem, even sending error report after error report to whoever's making a collection of these things.

My question is directed to anyone familiar with this issue. I believe that, despite the fact that it may appear that the problem is evident (i.e., running Renegade on a Mac), the circumstances surrounding this technical difficulty are really no different than if I were trying to install the game on a PC. I'm running Windows on an Intel chip, with more than enough power and space to get the game working properly.

So what is the problem, and how do I fix it?

I don't exactly know a solution to your problem but wanted to thank you for making your question so clear. Many players come here "help! Ren doesn't work!"

You can find me in The KOSs2 (TK2) discord while I'm playing. Feel free to come and say hi! TK2 discord

Can we have the exact spec of your mac, and have you installed SP3 and DirectX9?

As to your using an ISO but with your own key: That's not piracy in terms of financial loss, you still paid for that key.

The Mac has 512 MB of RAM and a 1.85 GHz processor, while the partition devoted to Windows has a mere 5 GB of hard drive space available. It wasn't meant for much, just for a few small games and Renegade. However, I have not installed either Direct X or SP3. If that solves the problem, then I am eternally in your debt.

Renegade's setup runs in DirectX (I think) since its a graphical installer, so installing DirectX first is probably a good idea. Although, strictly speaking, XP should have come with a version of DirectX installed which is sufficient to launch the installer...

I installed the most recent version of DirectX and let the Windows Update have its way with my computer for nigh on a half hour, and I'm still having the problem. I think that the issue might actually be with my Mac. I'll try to rearrange some stuff, use BootCamp instead of VMWare Fusion, but I appreciate the help.

You're using VMWare.

That's probably a problem - most VM software doesn't let the virtual machine have all the pretty hardware that you may actually possess, and therefore your virtual Windows machine probably has a non-3D graphics card "installed".

Try bootcamp.

So the fact that I'm using VMWare could be the only real problem?

Boot Camp would actually be easier, it seems. It doesn't take up the RAM of using both OS's at once, which would allow for a much smoother run of Renegade.
I was just using VMWare because my stepdad had a copy lying around. If changing to a free program would solve the problem, then, hell, I'm all for it.

Yes, generally, the simulated hardware that the guest OS can see is poor quality and therefore Renegade won't run. Do try bootcamp.
