LAN works... over a local area network.

What you need is more than one computer that you physically all connect to a HUB or router. This can be by UTP cables or wireless.

Then go to "LAN": one can host and the others can join. That's it in short. If you need more info on LAN, then I'd suggest google or wikipedia.
