I've got 3 external HDD's, one 250 gb Seagate, one 500 GB Western Digital, and one 750 GB Maxtor, and none have on/off switches, which works fine for me. Just unplug and auto shutoff. All 3 work perfectly as far as I can tell (cept the first Maxtor I got fried on the 2nd day, lost a ton of HiDef movies, but new one works fine).
Reviews seem to indicate reliability, which is really what your main concern should be when looking for a hdd. I'd also recommend Western Digital, since they are a well known company who do make reliable drives. (My WD is still running fine even after several months at full capacity (not that amount on the drive makes a difference)).
