Well I just built a new system - now we have two relatively high-end computers in the house plus six others.

Anyway, here are the specs of my new system (on the right) and my other higher-end system (on the left):

P4 2.2 Ghz--------------------------------------P4 2.4 Ghz 800Mhz FSB
ASUS P4T533-C--------------------------------ASUS P4P800 Deluxe
512 MB Samsung PC1066 RDRAM--------------512MB Dual-Channel DDR400
Enermax 450W PS------------------------------Enermax 350W PS
ATI AIW Radeon 8500DV 64 MB (BBA)---------ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (BBA)
WD 120GB 7200RPM, IBM 45GB 7200RPM------Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM 8Mb Cache
Pioneer DVR-A04 DVD-RW, Sony CD-RW-------LiteOn DVD-ROM
Nokia 800Pro+ 18" LCD--------------------------Dell 1800FP 18" LCD
Win XP Pro--------------------------------------Win XP Pro SP1a
Aluminum Case---------------------------------Black/Silver Enermax Case w/neon lights

Both work very well with games in general, and Renegade works nicely at 1280x1024 (limited by my monitors) with full detail, full aniso, etc., although Renegade's graphics aren't really the best compared to the newest games Smile - but that's fine, still a very good game.

And I made a new WOL name - Radeon980 Very Happy

I'm not a computer hardware buff, but why did you downgrade your power supply?

Well it's a different system, so I'm not upgrading or downgrading, but I guess it was a cost-cutting effort - I got a pretty nice deal on all the parts. The new system, not including the LCD, cost a tad less than $1000, which IMO is pretty good.

Oh yeah, the computer itself is great! Do you own both systems still, or did you sell the old and use the funds to pay for the new?

I build and repair computers a lot and I've had no problem with the Asus boards so far. That system seems like a decent system. Normally I opt out for the Athlon XP over the Pentium 4 due to the fact you can save a lot of cash. However with the XP 3000 and XP 3200 it's not worth it as it isn't performing as well as the P4 and the price differece is very little when you come to the new Athlon chips. I think i'll be using the P4 £.06 for people wanting that sort of power. Hopefull the new 64 bit athlon will offer some great new performance and features.

Nah, I just work out the best deals I can on the systems.

About Asus mobos, I've experienced many of them, both for my own systems and for systems I've built for other people - I've had no trouble with them.

Regarding AMD, I had originally wanted to make this new system an AMD-based one, but when it came down to it, the price difference was so little that I decided not to, plus the fact that for the most part the P4s seem to outperform the latest Athlon XPs (2600+ - 3200+).

Hmm...I'd like to see the benchmarks of your new system vs. my new system...it would be very interesting to see. Most likely because of the faster FSB of the P4 as well as your 3200 RAM, i'd be a few points behind. Smile

K if you're interested, run 3DMark2001SE, 3DMark2003, and PCMark2002 - all available from http://www.futuremark.com - and post your results while I run them on this system. Smile

That's what I thought that led me to start planning an Asus A7N8X-Deluxe machine with a 2400+ that would be very similar to your setup, but when I actually starting sourcing my parts, the difference between the AMD and the Intel solution came down to something like $50, (people are usually less willing to negiotiate on AMD pricing than on Intels because they make more profit on the latter) so I decided to stick with Intel.

A tad of OC'ing on the Athlon XP as well as some faster RAM should bring it to the level of the P4.

Although none of this matters for Renegade Very Happy

Renegade runs smoothly on an old P2-450 with an ATI Rage 128 that I have laying around, and the only difference between my two higher-end systems (the ones in my sig) in Renegade is that while running at the usual 1280x1024 with the highest settings, the newer system never moves from the standard 60 local FPS while my slightly older one occasionally drops to 58 local FPS in larger battles, etc. Smile

This is even more impressive than the last one - this is a 2.4 Ghz Intel P4 with the non-Deluxe version of my mobo (they're using an Asus P4P800) and an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB card, and they're not even using PC3200 or higher RAM - 25191 3DMarks with only PC3000 DDR.
