I have a 512MB GeForce 8500 GT. I had the BSOD problems with XP about 3-5 minutes into any 3D intensive application, but not with Vista. BSOD was always blaming nv4_disp.dll. I installed the card on an already installed Windows installation (Vista was installed after the card was). I since have had to reinstall Windows XP (clean install, all formated drives) for something else unrelated and I can now play any 3D intensive game now for hours on end with no problems. I haven't had to replace any hardware at all. I have a TForce4 U775 motherboard which also has the Nvidia chipsets.
