This is a disaster!

I was working on an "extra-curricular" project when I suddenly encountered an application error in gmax. I thought ok, well I can recover this.

However, a while later I discovered that gmax can no longer save properly...apparently...every new file I try to save results in the crash of gmax whenever I try to reload the file--plus it crashes windows explorer whenever I highlight the gmax file itself in windows explorer!

Right after the reformat I installed gmax, and it worked perfectly.

I'm running Windows XP, and all of my older gmax files previous to this catastrophe are intact and load properly, but I can't save any new gmax files that aren't...corrupt. I've back tracked to gmax 1.1--still happens. After getting all the windows updates and what not the gmax problem started happening again--I lost track.

Bottom line this is going to halt all of my Renegade projects period! Crying or Very Sad

Specs (my ancient machine =P):
600 mhz AMD Athlon
Geforce 4 ti 4200
384 MB RAM

Please, any ideas are welcome. Sad

Heh, guess what, I get the exact same problem. It completely fucked over my Radar Dome for Renegade Alert, except I can still merge in the files after saving them.

The end result is that I can save, merge, save over old file, merge, save over, merge, over and over again...

It's incredibly annoying. I don't feel like reinstalling Windows and reformatting my computer to fix it, either.

The ironic thing is that reinstalling/reformating only temporarily fixed the problem! Mad

I guess I could do that, but omfg, why did it just start happening to me now?

How long have you had this problem ACK?

I have a problem where...if i just let it sit open for awhile (say 20 mins idle) all of a sudden *beep* and the error message of would you like to save your work ren-x is closing down....I always say no and load up the last file i had saved.

g-max is very buggy.

They should update their softeware.

It started two days ago, when I finished the Radar Dome. Once I saved it to individual parts for the interior\exterior\door proxies, it wouldn't allow me to open them anymore.

Everything else got fucked up, too.

This began happening for me yesterday...now I'm just frantic and flustered and angry and frustrated but call me silly, or is this some conspiracy? Shocked

Seriously, this is so upsetting. The merge thing works, but it feels like three weeks of hard work is down the drain. Mad Crying or Very Sad

Of course it does. You can still export files and Renegade won't have an issue with it. I was working with MetroTS earlier and it didn't crash at all in-game, even with meshes exported from the fucked-up *.gmax files.

OMFG!!!!

All this trouble because of a STUPID microsoft update!!! Mad Mad Mad

http://d217859.bo21.bootlegweb.com/forum/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t=001346

Since I'm using XP, it's all because of update XP kb823980--I uninstalled it, and BOOM, gmax works properly again!

ACK, I don't remember about Win98, but I think some way to uninstall this update just might do the trick--it solved the problem for me!

Thank God!!!

I have no clue on how to uninstall Windows XP updates just to fix this... I am getting some new hardware, so I suppose I'll be able to work again when I have to reinstall Windows at that point in time.

If you know how to remove that security update, gimme a holler here. Smile

hmmm... I've heard something of that service pack. it contained many bugs. and some programs are very slow after I installed the service pack.
I hope there will be a new version of it soon.

Oh my mistake, from previous screenshots I've seen from you I thought you were running 98, but you obviously must have disabled all of the extra visual stuff!

Anyway, it's in add-remove programs, usually at the very bottom of the list. Removing should entail no problems--I haven't had any so far, even though I got a warning that "removing this update could cause these programs to no longer function" and it goes on to list almost every program I had installed.

Haha. No, I don't use Windows 98, I just use the Windows Classic scheme for Windows XP. I hate that bubbly looking standard scheme.

I did take out all that stuff earlier, and everything worked. gMax was able to open everything that had been corrupted, and it saved other files just perfect, as well.

At least you got to the bottom of this. How fucking annoying...

I have Windows XP Pro, with that updat installed, Gmax and 3D Studio Max R5 and have no problems what so ever with either max program.

Also for anyone who doesn't know go into Add or Remove Programs and you can select the hotfix and remove it.

*edit* okay now I see what is being discussed. I ran a test before importing my lasted project and gmax screwed up.
