You need to be connected to a network for LAN to work. If you want to play with other people, you want to:

Main Menu --> Multiplay Internet --> GameSpy --> (Not sure what happens here)

OR

Main Menu --> Multiplay Internet --> Westwood Online (WOL)

Then follow these instructions.
