The main cause to the 'explosion' is Neucliation (spelling?).
This is the cause of tiny little craters on the outside of the sweet, when they're placed in the coke they create tiny pockets of air which, as air does in liquid, rise and create pressure.
This pressure is shown about 1.2 seconds after you put the sweet inside, as it's released as a large tower of foam erupting from the neck.
Only a few chemicals in the sweet and coke cause similar reaction, but not as much as the neucliation. Both of these reactions combined make the pressure greater and more powerful.
For those who drank the stuff then eat the sweets, the pressure would be so great that it would burst valves to let the pressure escape, else, make your stomach explode inside you, slowly eroding your internal organs eventually causing death.

MythBusters, also, successfully debunked the myth that it would actually do you harm. Just the simple act of drinking the cola would be enough to release too much carbonation, so that the reaction cannot take place.
whoa.
