Well, for those of you who don't know, i own a 15.4" MacBook Pro.
I like it to run Windows now and then for my modding skills and Steam and whatnot. So i repartitioned my hard drive to give windows a nice 30gb chunk.
One day, i decided to download and install Steam and buy the Orange Box from it since it's all the rage now, and once i spent a good 7 hours downloading and decrypting Portal, i decided to run it.
I got a window from Steam saying my graphics card drivers aren't up to date and i should update them for optimal performance. With my previous experience with Source games, if i don't have the right drivers, the game crashes when its loaded into memory. So i visited the ATI site and downloaded the latest drivers (drivers only, not Catalyst) for my graphics card.
I attempted to install, yet the installer "Couldn't find the hardware". I thought 'okay.. it's a mac, it has video card drivers with bootcamp already installed, i should be fine'. It told me that it failed to install any drivers because there was no hardware for it to interact with. I ran the game again, and clicked the nice, already highlighted button saying "Continue anyway" hoping it would be fine. It was fine... Portal ran very well and i was happy with the other Steam games that ran... And still run to this day.
About 2 days later, i experienced my first Windows 'Blue Screen of Death'. This is my very first experience of this 'Blue Screen of Death' in the 8 years that i have been using Windows. This 'Blue Screen of Death' was caused by ATI drivers (that weren't supposed to be installed ) from entering an infinite loop.
Now, every time i startup Windows i have to end those tasks to prevent it from happening (yes, it happened again in the same day after restarting). However, it still finds excuses to give me 'Blue Screens of Death' in which i never payed any particular attention to besides holding the power button for several seconds.
I've tried removing the executables but it gives me "Access Denied" and i can't be bothered installing Unlocker to delete them...
Some things i would like to know:
1. Why did ATI driver installer install drivers for hardware that 'didn't exist'?
2. Why do ATI drivers run into infinite loops causing system failure?
3. Why didn't i wait 1 WEEK before getting my Mac with an nVidia graphics card...
Has anyone else had any problems with ATI drivers?
(PS: I forbid Trooprm02 to post in this topic as he'll start flaming ATI/nVidia for no reason what-so-ever)

I had a MOM.exe running after I installed ATI Catalyst Control :/ So I reverted back and installed Omega Drivers. They are AWESOME!

Yeah that sucks man, I doubt there is much more your could do if the installer cant find the hardware other than trying a 3rd party driver.
I have had mixed experiences with 3rd party drivers, they often fix problems like this but cause others with other applications. What is your ATI's model number etc?
Always buy Nvidia - Direct response because you didn't want to hear it
EDIT: Also Orange Box ftw.

They cause the same loops over and over again because they have a certian 'complete command' script I will post the script soon.

An X1600 128mb PCI-e onboard.
The new OS X is being released in 9 days (apple.com) and i've got it on preorder, so i'll probably be forced to do a fresh install of windows which will be fine anyway since it's acting up like it's infected (i press a key, no response, just happened today after the blue screen of death).
*EDIT* It's an ATI card... not Mac specific since it runs on Intel chipsets now...
Even though... why the fuck did it install faulty software in the first place?

No, Bootcamp forces Apple's 'up-to-date' ATI drivers down our throat, we cannot install ATI's own drivers unless there's a workaround I'm not aware of.
I don't know man. :S

I have an old X300, and everytime I get driver updates something goes screwy. I blame catalyst, and I also blame ATI for not making it clear what catalyst was, and making it less than intuitive for a manual update.
I had SERIOUS issues with BF2142 and managed to get an 0xf error that even Microsoft tech help was still "working on" after two years. So everytime I started up I would get these .NET framework exception errors and be unable to run certain apps as a result.
Rollback wouldn't fix it, and I couldn't do a purge of Catalyst and the drivers for whatever magical Windows XP reason.
I was very angry and one day we bought a new HP printer. When we did the software install, it automagically fixed the .NET and ATI 0xf errors. I have no clue why, and I don't care, but I am not pleased with the driver update system from ATI. Not one bit.

ATI video cards and laptops do not get along. The way ATI does their drivers for them is a joke. When I took my buddies laptop to n00bparty '07 I reformatted and did a fresh install for him as a thank you (and so it wouldn't run like ass while I was there). I never did get the damn ATI video card working right as Crimson can contenst to. The frustrating thing is that for laptops ATI is a much better choice considering what you get for the money.

I have a on board X300 and installed the Catalyst thing, Anyway, Point is, I had no errors and was able to play the BF2142 demo fine.
You got hit with some serious bad luck.

The demo and the full version had significant differences, and due to a high demand on the card x300 users have to dial in the game settings very specifically to avoid frame chug. As it is now, I still can only play an hour or two before the card heats up to a point where it's unplayable.

I have no problems with my onboard ATI X1550 though it screwed up once when I installed a "Secondary Driver" thru Windows Update (whatever that is). It caused the comp to not register with the monitor when running normally and I had to rollback the driver in Safe Mode.

LOL, Such stupidity makes me want to ask god if suicide really is a sin in his eyes.
Iv'e had two ATi cards, My on board card, X300 (What I still have, for a back up.) Iv'e had no driver failures, Or hardware failures with it.
My X550 (PCI, God I love this card <3) What I use now, Has gave me one driver error while playing the UT3 demo (Just a little VGU error), Doesn't happen in HL2: Ep2, Portal and TF2.
The X2900 HD has had some incredible feed back, And is supposedly a great card, Vista and Next-Gen proof.
Please, Go get some facts before you spout out mass amounts of bullshit, please.
I would buy a nVidia card, But I can only get one that uses 256MB worth of memory, Sadly nVidia don't support there old cards with Drivers, I mean, That's great, right? Spend all your money on there latest and greatest thing that is expensive as hell?

Actually, no DX10 cards now are "Next-Gen proof" because Microsoft has come up with DX10.1 which is incompatible with DX10 hardware.
