Windiws Vista will use up to one Gibibit of system memory to cache commonly used software products on your machine. As the others have said, you should try to disable themes completely by disabling the Windows Theme service. If you do not know how to disable the service, type 'msconfig' (without quotes) in the search bar on the start menu. Go to the services tab, scroll down to Themes and uncheck it. A system reboot is required for changes to take effect.
Also, if you're using a version of Windows Vista that supports Aero, turn it off since it requires more video processing and even more system memory.
In the long run, if Windows Vista is running sluggish on your computer, I highly recommend formatting your hard disk and installing Windows XP.

You can always get a job and purchase new hardware. That works a lot better anyway.

Vista transformation pack from windows X, a 90% accurate copy of windows vista's gui, replaces all icons, sounds, cursors, and effects with vista's. Can be applied to 1 user, or all users without effecting the entire PC.
Google windows vista transformation pack 7
Actually....I just misread, i thought he wanted xp to vista, now he wants vista to xp...no idea.
