Well I don't actually know if I'll be getting one. Hopeing i can make try and get one for Christmas or Graduation from high school from parents... But anyways, I know a few things but there are some parts I'm not sure. The two main ones I can think of now are how do I know what kind of power supply to get and what motherboard. I'm thinking I'll probably try and get an AMD Dual core at 3.0 GHz, 2 gigs of ram, and probably two 512mb video cards.

But this likely won't be for awhile and maybe even better stuff will be out by then, but anyways, would like some input.

erm 600+ watt? 500-550 is prolly enough... Especially if you get instead of the crappy AMD a Intel C2D Q9xxx or E9xxx series(they have lower energy usage).

Do this it's easier.

HP and compaq for years have been rated #1 or #2 in buy a already made PC, I would buy one for like 800 dollars since you want a good CPU, go to best buy or office depot weekly and look, they have PC's that come with 20inch high def wide screen monitors which are clearer and better than most lcd tv's out there.

I saw last week for 850$

3gig ddr2 ram
500gb harddrive
20inch lcd
nvidia 8600 256mb graphics (new card supporting Dx10)
windows vista ultimate
amd athlon x2 5200+

good price for a PC which includes a lcd, without the LCD it was like 600 dollars.

AMD isnt crappy, but does use more power for the same workload a intel would do, but heck it doesnt matter, because it's cheaper to buy, a intel PC at office depot with similar specs will cost over 1 thousand.

True, but If you build your own buying the same parts as I posted earlier, it will come out to around 800 dollars no screen, I have 2-3 HP's in my house from the past and present and I am very happy with their quality of customer support and quality of product.

It depends where you go, I looked in to buying the components for my machine and it would have cost more than the pre-built system (was able to modify a discounted system designed to meet a £600 budget for a PC Magazine Review). You also have to remember that not everyone is capable or confident enough to build it themselves.

There are several companies that will let you actually choose all the individual components, I would go somewhere like that as you can save money where you don't need to spend it and put it where you do - for me this meant standard sound/keyboard/mouse, no bundled software or speakers in exchange for extra memory and GFX upgrade.

He wants SLI'd "512mb video cards", and by that he means at least 8800GTS 640mb cards. 500W is not enough. And none of the Qxxxx cards have "lower energy usage," they are quad cores and are on the top end of the energy usage scale.

I wouldnt even bother getting SLI'd cards for high end cards, because even my last gen nvidia card (7600gt 512mb) it handles games all full graphics and full resolution, and at full speed, but for newer games like stranglehold it handles graphics good, but the engine it runs off needs tons of ram and CPU, the minimum specs were a duel core cpu, and 2gb ddr2 memory, I returned the game after it lagged like heck, but had awsome graphics...

if you are going amdx2 the you should check out www.newegg.com for the black box, 6400x2 cpu. it has really good reviews and overclock ability if you know what you are doing that is. i believe its am2 socket so go find a motherboard that supports am2 socket. just a hit, if it supports intel then its not good for amd. and btw alot are saying in their reviews that this processor overclocked is the same or better then some quads.

The thing about building my own computer is that I've never done it before and I don't want to end up making some dumb mistake and ruining an important/expensive part :/ . But I probably will shop around a little and check out the computers at Best buy and whatnot to see what they have. But I'm thinking I'll likely go to an online site where they let you choose the parts. Also, another thing with in stores is they pretty much all seem to come with Vista, and I would prefer to stick with XP. But if it does end up I have to wait til graduation in may, maybe more of the kinks will be worked out.

If you dont have experience working with a MB, dont build your own PC then, hooking in parts is easy, but wiring them isnt.

Naa, I did the wiring all right. It's the screws that fucked me...the motherboard didn't come with ANY screws so...when I turned it on, b00m fried.

www.newegg.com - someone posted that, i highly recommend it myself

try to get a deal on a monitor though, they are a bit pricy at newegg, but you can get a good case and all the fun stuff in the inside for a low price

You an buy a decent gaming case for like 50+ dollars, a nicer one for 100-200. I wouldnt spend money on a case though, I would just buy a cheap one, I like the have machines that look like a normal PC, then have it roaring on the inside.

You could try to do this depending if you have the $$$ or not.
