I'd play Ren a whole lot more than I do if it weren't for the fact that it gives my campus network indigestion. It's the only game out of my entire collection (natch) that refuses to pull under a 300 ping when played over the network- and often runs as high as 900. Every other damn game I have gives me something playable, like 100 or below. Honestly, I want to play Ren. Right now. I just can't without experiencing all over again the warpingly blue hell of a good time that was playing Ren with a high ping back in my 56k days. I'd be one happy camper if I could find a way to get Ren working properly down here.

Other than we both host Renegade servers there is not much that you can compare Jelly and n00bstories with. The servers that are empty are because they are the same run of the mill bullshit. You just showed that the only reason people find the servers to begin with, is because of the a0000 nick's.
Qualities? There arent any. 90% of the time on public servers it's all about people being Rambo, instead of helping the team.
I never go to an a000 nick. I don't see the need, I prefer private servers. I find that the people, actually appreciate the word teamwork.

The a00 nickname attracts the players, but it's the quality of the server, the staff, and the gameplay that keeps them coming back.
|
I beg to differ. Back when I used to have my 28 player server on a0000000d, it was full almost all hours of the day, it was even hard for the admins just to get ingame. We had great moderation, a huge ban-list full of hackers, and not a single complaint on our forums for an entire year.
As soon as we took that nickname off, everyone disappeared. Everyone.
Bad moderation and cheating admins never stopped the Xil server btw, which was always populated, and had an a00 nickname.

You guys make my head hurt.
I didn't own myself. I conceded that, sure, some of our "new player" traffic is because of our high nick. But those people and all the others come back for a reason. We have a server they like. We have something they can't get elsewhere. We don't keep our 50 player server full on the random new guys that pick us because were at the top of the list.

As you pretty much run an classic aow server, what is so awesome about it?
FanMaps and MP had a few top a00 names once and the server would always be FULL, since wol to xwis fucked that up and we lost our names, our "new player" numbers have dropped and our community was never the same again without that nick.
Now, I'll do agree you have alot of old players, who keep you're server alive, but they only old, because at first, just like us all, would join the servers at the top.
I'll remember that the WNx and Koss used to have top server names, I've would join them all the time in my first days of Renegade, now they have are in the middle to bottom.

With our KOSs2 server, we've been through all stages. We got to use the a00000002-nickname for several months and had a lot of players indeed. We put in an anti swearing policy which wasn't appreciated by everyone but a lot of people also liked it and most players got used to it. Server kept very populated.
Then we moved way down to a000000bl (which is about the middle of the list). We hardly saw any new players, but some of the regulars kept coming but only due to the fact we have an active clan that kept playing there. The serevr hardly ever was over 10-12 players, though.
We now are at a0000000b which is one of the last nicknames on the first page (or second if you're on a low resolution). Server is now quite often around 16-20 players (max is 24), it fills up at sunday evenings.
So there you go: from top to bottom to almost top, the number of players is clearly influenced by the place you got. I need to agree that we got regulars over that time and they now form the majority of our players. When we were at a00000002 I saw a lot more names I just hardly knew.
I think n00bstories may be a bit of an exception: they might keep a lot of their players if they drop off first page but I believe it would still loose at least a third of their player number. Then again: why else would they use the a000 - nick . Saying you can get as much traffic with a zzz-nick as with a a000-nick is bullshit. Some communities surely could limit the player drop though but isn't that because they got known thanks to a000-nicks in the first place (except the really old communities that were around before the a000-stuff started).
As last exemple: I remember joining a to me unknown a00-server several months ago which had an sfps of 15 and dropping (!). It was filled with 26 players, all complainiong about lag but staying in the server to play!
BTW: this is unrelated to the discussion if a000 is "fair" or not, I don't think there currently is a different system that would work as good as this one does. There could be one if we got access to the patch system and people could start selecting favourite servers and/or servers would be auto ranked on amount of players (could be in % of max players, for exemple). But that's a different discussion .
You can find me in The KOSs2 (TK2) discord while I'm playing. Feel free to come and say hi! TK2 discord

I too am starting to notice that there isn't much teamwork anymore. Most people who play now just want to do their own thing. Servers have so many different modules/hacks running that the game play isn't like it used to be. Why in the world would a server enable the ability to destroy tanks and allow them to be rebuilt again? The originality of having an 8 (I believe it's 8?) tank max limit was to keep the game play balanced. I wish I was with titan1x77 to destroy all those retarded broken down tanks, stupidest thing I've ever seen in a server...let me know the next time you join a server that has that enabled . Why waste 30 minutes trying to build all these tanks when you can just use some teamwork and organize a rush with apc's/tanks and destroy some buildings. The only thing I like that I've notice was in the n00bstories server where snipers didn't get as many points, as they used to, by shooting tanks.

Place on the the list does affect traffic from what I've seen. Sure, if you run a crappy server, players won't return, but as long as it's not a really bad server, they'll come back. I think it's more that people don't want to play in empty servers, especially considering the lack of players in this game, so they go to the full ones. What gets them full to begin with is the fact that they're at the top.
About the game, I think the MODs have made it more fun, interesting, and unique, but clearly they aren't for everyone. I'm glad there's diversity and choice though. If you like 'em, go to a server that has them. If not, go elsewhere. I myself have started to like more original play (no starting credits, no base defenses, shells I don't really care for or against) and I've been playing at Jelly alot recently becuase of that (though they do have donate, it's disabled within the first few minutes).

And it's not like the classic AOW servers will disappear. Besides server-side mods attract more people if done right.
Look at the EKT Marathon server and Halo2pac server for comparision.
Short of writing an essay, I will say the EKT Marathon has the right balance of server-side mods while the Halo2pac overuses the mods and makes the game confusing and shitty.
And yeah, you can always avoid those servers if you don't like them. The bottom line is, the server should attract lots of players through any means necessary.

People don't know how to play this game anymore, they complain about attacking the enemy's base (points), complain about holding the field, while someone keeps buying tanks to "mass" build them.
It's a shame the day is gone where people worked together to destroy the other teams base, instead of bitching about people trying to hold the field and kill tanks while keeping engineers in the HON repairing.
I understand they get credits, and I'm going to kill every shiny stank that sticks its nose out, so I honestly don't see a point in sitting around while they build 30 med tanks for a rush 30 mins later...
To each their own, but that should work both ways instead of kicking someone who knows how to play, and is only helping his team.
well, after about 20 mins of boredom, I grab a Sydney and kill all the med tank shells...lol
Back to a better server I go, wish "The Pitts" was still around
ps. they had about 30 meds for 10 players, go figure
|
Okay, let me get this straight, they were massing for a team attack. So you get tired and get Sydney and destroy the tanks that they were building so they could attack as a team, therefore destroying the team work. Which makes you the person that wasn't helping the team. I mean you could have just quit instead of wasting 18,000 of your teams credits and who knows how much of their time. And beings friendly fire was proabably off they had no way to stop you.
Basically I am getting at, you should not be complaining about there being no team work, as you destroyed what team work there was.

Well, a simple reply is: You dont have it straight.
A more complex reply is : Instead of people actually getting tanks and "attempting" to destroy the base, they were more concerned with not attacking them and giving them credits, since score doesnt matter in a "marathon"
After several attempts by them to !kick me, which were voted no... I tried to get a gunner rush the OB, while 1 person massed a bunch of med tanks.
remember the map was field, there was no teamwork involved, just alot of bitching, and before you call me a point whore, i wiped out every stank and arty that came around the corner of the base, when nothing was coming I kept engys repairing the HON, by no means is this hampering my team...they repair and buy stanks and repeat, giving us more time to keep them pinned down.
I was fed up and just blew all their tanks shells...but is this really hampering your team? all the tanks were bought buy one guy, and I left him 1 or 2, i didnt get them all b4 i was kicked.
If I wasn't kicked, i would of gladly left him 1 last med tank and told him to get in...lol
anyways, marathons are lame, i dont have 2 hours to watch my team sit around while a person kills their tanks and repairs them back...lame server, lame actions by me, GG
So I ask again, what happen to this game, back in the day these dumb ass tactics were non-existent and would of never worked anyways, I'll stay on good server's for now on....The-Pitts was the best server I have ever been involved with as far as team work goes...and this is hard to find nowadays in a pub.

| Wait, so becuase YOU don't like marathons, and becuase YOU don't have the time, THEY had to suffer when it was YOU who was choosing to be in that game in the first place? If you dislike the way your team is performing, you have three options.
1. Hamper your team.
2. Try and help them anyway.
3. Leave the game.
