Ya right now i am stuck, I have windows XP and linux working, but for some reason, I cant boot windows XP unless the external hard drive is in, it wont ask what to boot unless i plug it in for some reason, if i start the laptop without the HDD inside, it will say error21 and sit there....
I dont mind booting XP this way, but what my main issue is....I cant learn to like ubuntu when I cant get the drivers and internet to work, I was told to use ndiswrapper, but I dont get realy how to use it, so i'm stuck with horrible looking GUI because my graphics driver doesnt work properly with linux....meh so many problems, dave you know how to fix?

You wouldn't believe the number of different websites I have tried from Google searches to get the card working, is seems to half work sometimes but refuses to detect any networks, even though Linux says its working fine. And I know its not a network problem as I had my laptop stood next to it showing full signal strength.
From what I can tell later revisions of the same card work on ndiswrapper, but the first revision, which I have, will not Maybe I will swap it with the later revision from the study pc and see if that works sometime

Wow this is really interesting. I'm running ubuntu off the CD right now.
Question, If i install ubuntu on a removable hard disk it's going to partition it. I have a 250 gig USB removable hard disk btw. Will i be able to view the content of the rest of the hard drive from ubuntu and will i be able to view the content of my internal HDD with windows on it?
*edit* I think i just answered my own question. Excuse my n00byness with Linux but this is friggin amazing.
New question, if i install ubuntu on a removable disk, what option do I use in boot setup?

DONT DO IT JAMIE! DOOOONNNNTTTT
Ubuntu ran good from the CD, but after installing, I got screwed there, luckily i installed on a external HDD, Parition your HD to like 100 gig for linux and the other for file storage if you want to use it as a HDD still, otherwise if you partition the entire drive and install linux over it all, then your screwed, cause it's file format will be unrecognized by windows as a external HDD. I am using the entire HDD because i myself dont use it as a external drive much at all, i will warn you though, if you do this, it will rewrite your master boot record with GRUB loader, if you dont have your HDD plugged in, then your PC wont load windows XP or linux, the only way to fix this is to redo the boot record with your XP cd and type fixmbr it will say danger, may screw blah blah, hit yes and it will instantly say mbr restored, restart and windows will load right away.......or delete GRUB and use your LiveCD from linux, as a boot disc, your PC will load the disc then you can install, partion, or boot linux from a HDD of your choice...I like this better because when i dont have my HDD plugged in, it loads window, when i do, it will ask if i want to load linux...very helpful...oh and with ubuntu, I hated it, I use suse now, it rox.

Frig, thanks AoB I almost made a huge mistake!
I like the whole idea of linux. I think it's just because i like the idea of being able to plug in a removable drive into someone's computer and booting an OS that gives me control of their data. I'm an evil some bitch.
Anyways, thanks for the tip. I'm going to do way more research into this.
*edit* Ideally this is what I want to happen. I have 2 hdd's. One is a 30 gig that i use for windows and application data etc. Then i bought a 250 gig removable usb drive. I want to install some sort of linux on the removable hdd but still have 200 gigs for my windows data. That would leave linux with 50 gigs. Then at boot time if the removable drive is plugged in i want it to ask me weather i want to boot windows or linux and if it isn't plugged in it should just boot windows. Is that possible? Also, best linux distro out there?

Suse seems more like windows XP in terms of the way it's laid out, I like it, but tell you the truth, using it now for 7 hours stright...I dont like it......same for all others like fedora, ubuntu, suse, cause alot of my hardware didnt work, and the way it's laid out, I just feel like using windows XP/vista is much easier for me, plus since I am a windows nerd already, I should stick with it.

Wasn't it Ubuntu that had soft-core porn as a desktop picture, that came with the download? Something about celebrating 'human community' or some bu11shit.
