Hey guys, recently I saw a video on youtube about ubuntu and XGL installed, it's like windows aero for vista, but 10x cooler and better looking, and alot of people say they get it to work fine with low system specs, I was wondering, has anyone used ubuntu linux on their PC's? Is it just as good or better than xp/vista? I really like it but I dont know if i want to relearn how the operating system works, because I am a XP/vista nerd and know just about everything in it, well linux is completly different so is it easy to learn to use and fix? I have a laptop with a 64mb video card and 512mb ram which i am thinking of using with ubuntu linux, oh and if you use ubuntu, can you tell me if Wine works with renegade? it's a windows emulator that lets you install windows PC games and run them on linux, I was wondering if renegade runs fine with it, thanks.

I used Ubuntu for a while so I could bounce traffic off of it in SSH from my university connection (to get around their packet filters). It worked great for what I used it for, but I didn't try to play any games or install anything fancy on it. It was just sitting in a corner in my home basement until the PC died, not even a monitor/mouse/keyboard attached to it.

I ran Beryl on my laptop with integrated graphics, it ran very well for what it did, but was a little sluggish.

It's different, which may be better depending on your needs.

No, it's not as simple to get into, however the community is a lot more supportive.

I haven't tried, but I believe people have had success with Cedega.

WINE stands for "Wine Is Not an Emulator". It's a library, not a virtual environment.
I would say run ubuntu inside VMWare for a week and try to set it all up as you want. The first week is by far the most painful, after that it's much easier.

I actually have Ubuntu setup on this machine in a dual boot setup with Vista, but I very rarely use it since it refuses to work with my wireless cards (apparently the ones I have are notoriously difficult to get working with Linux) and therefore to get it on the internet I have to get a 10 meter Ethernet cable out of the cupboard and trail it across the top of the stairs to the switch in the study to get it on the internet... and I don't like doing that as its a bloody trip hazard waiting to happen...

If hackers or w.e. wants to hack Linux...they have no luck since Linux is open source and changes SO god damn rapidly.

This is like me back then as a mac fanboy "ya my mac doesnt need anti virus, cause none exist" then a few years later "OMG MY MAC DIED FROM A VIRUS" so then i try out windows, then fell inlove, I didnt care about the viruses because I dunno, I guess all my games ran on windows, and ......i dont remember why i switched actually...
But anyways, I will be trying the dual boot method...as soon as i see how you do it, and as soon as my download at 350kbps off this slow utah server is done.
EDIT:
I'm thinking of just installing ubuntu to a external harddrive and setting my bios to load from that at start up, I dont want to mess up my current harddrive which has all my precious data (renegade lol) so I will just try and install it to my 160 gig external HDD, it's 7200rpm so it's a fast hard drive, and if i love it sooooo much, i might just install over the main hdd in my laptop.

I used Ubuntu (thanks to Icedog for making me want to try it so bad), and I really liked it. It was a bit hard to setup for the first time since I had never used a Linux environment before hand, but after you get used to it there's nothing to it.

It runs smoothly, and I used it to browse the web mostly, write school reports and whatnot.

If you truly don't have a solid reason for switching to a Linux OS, then don't, and as other suggested, start out with a dual-boot configuration first, and see how you like it.

Here we go again (nothing against you), but you can't really compare Linux to Windows. They both have their uses. Linux is widely used to run servers, and more network type applications, especially in a corporate environment. Windows is just all around easy to use, and most peoples cup of tea.
