I think a lot of it comes down to what networking equipment you buy. If you get £10 unbranded rubbish its probably not going to work very well, I would always recommend getting mid-range belkin or linksys equipment for all the machines hooked up to the wireless network, and to keep the brand consistent, which should further help increase the strength of the connection.

My wireless router is on the first floor in the front room, and I can get a 100% signal and still full speed connection on my laptop say at the other end of my garden, which is at least 40 meters away from the router and through 3 walls...
