Charges against a man accused of repeatedly raping and molesting a 7-year-old girl were dismissed last week because the court could not find an interpreter fluent in the suspect's native West African language.

This is FUCKED UP! Since when can we not find an interpreter for ANY language? What if they guy was Mute? Just because you cannot communicate means you can go around raping little girls? Seriously what the fuck??

Plus, the guy obviously can both speak and understand english!

I just want to see where in the law it says that even if you speak and understand english, you are immune from prosecution for even a horrible crime unless people can talk to you in your native tongue?

he attended highschool and college in the states... but needs a translator that can speak some tribal language to describe the charges against him. and as far as i understand that since he cannot otherwise understand the charges then he cannot be charged.

this can only happen in America!

if i was the father of that poor girl i would go there and translate the charges for him myself... using some blunt weapon

Seems that more and more cases these days are being resolved using technicalities in the law, loopholes even, rather than hard evidence. This guy got the best of it (good for him, bad for the rest). Innocent until proven guilty, well ya can't prove me guilty if I don't speak English...

I think judges should just give people guilty verdicts if you know they did something but something like this happens, say a guy rapes a kid, you know he did it, something bad happens and the case must be closed, in this type of scenario, because everyone does know for 100% the guy did it...they should just give him guilty.

I think we should definitely change the legal system for this case. Screw the people who actually don't speak English; they probably aren't supposed to be here anyway.

And I think we would have a better time tracking criminals if everyone had an RFID chip in their arm.

Actually there was a case in brasil where tribesmen got away with murdering various poachers and drug smuglers, because they were/are not aware of brasilian law, which is of course convenient for the brasilian government, because they now have an extra army guarding their fucking huge border.

I agree about the first part, but the ID tracking chip is stupid, criminals will do anything as long as they dont get caught, even if that means ripping/performing personal surgery just to get rid of the chip...when they install these, there will be black market hospital procedures to get them out, just watch.

Far too many people are starting to bring it to every-day writing (there was a news report about someone using internet short-hand to write a school paper.. I can't find it at the moment) it's only a matter of time before it starts in on the spoken word.

Heck, enough people are resorting to abbreviating what they say as they would on the internet... enough that they actually parody it in a commercial. (I can't find that one either... it's a commercial with a mom and daughter talking. The Daughter is using abbreviations used in texting to talk with her mom.)

Yes.

That's the unfortunate thing about a free society. People abuse privileges. But I think it beats not having that option at all.

It's what got the US the title "Land of Opportunity." Some poor guy getting his toenails pulled out by the Chinese government can squeeze out of their border and into the US, where guess what? He has as good a chance as anyone to defend himself if someone tries to get him in trouble or he makes a mistake.

And if we as tourists get screwed in another country or don't have the bribe money for the police, we have to sit in a jail where the ACLU doesn't look while our government can't and won't legally do anything to help us.

But it's naturally the system's fault when someone manipulates it to his advantage.

In your original statement you made no such differences between the 2 situations mainly through rushing (at a guess) and not being able to see what a phrase can elude too.
