I'm starting a web hosting company and I would like to host somebody for a few months to work out any glitches I may have. I have pretty much everything set up, control panel, email server, ftp, DNS, etc. If anyone has a popular site who updates it frequently and knows what they expect of a web hosting provider, please PM for details.

Don't worry: all people are looking for is smth relatively cheap, very stable (downtimes are a webmaster's worst nightmare) and easy to use. Preferably also quite quick.

Security breaches are a webmasters worst nightmare. Downtime is an annoyance.

RoShamBo wrote on Wed, 18 July 2007 07:09 | Needs to run Solaris 10 on 2 dedicated servers with load sharing. Both should have some sort of remote desktop EG vnc through a VPN. Each box should have one terabyte hard disks with raid. It should have 24 hour monitoring from a technician. It should have 6500+ AMD X2 processor in each box with 30Gb of RAM. All for 10 bucks a month
|
Why raid? With that setup everything would seem stable, and unless you EXPECT some sort of damage or attack, theres no need for raid. Any setup w/o raid would run MUCH faster, tho less safer
|
unexpected hdd failure for some random reason, oofs, all clients are pissed. gg you lose, well 50% of the time...
But raid, one fails, no problem, take out, put new in, add to array .. clients see no downtime.

There are many different types of RAID, and RAID is usually faster because you're more likely to be reading than writing on a server, and mirrored drives (RAID 1) allow consecutive writes on the same data at the same time. RAID 0 on the other hand has no sort of redundancy, but increases speed.
You want RAID in a proper server because hard drives fail. It's not a case of 'if', but 'when' a drive will die, so if you have your data striped you're prepared for your drives to die. Another option is sequential backups.

Deal with hardware long enough, you would know unexpected things can happen at any given time. Doesn't matter what piece it is. The EXACT same thing can last 10 years on one machine, and 1 year on another. Or even the same machine it is possible aswell.
Nothing is 100%....
