I'm starting a web hosting company and I would like to host somebody for a few months to work out any glitches I may have. I have pretty much everything set up, control panel, email server, ftp, DNS, etc. If anyone has a popular site who updates it frequently and knows what they expect of a web hosting provider, please PM for details.

If someone has a popular websie, they'll want a stable webhost, not someone who wants them to check out if the webhost has flaws Wink. Good luck with your company, though.

There really isn't any flaws...i'm mainly looking for improvements. Like better services that I don't have.

Don't worry: all people are looking for is smth relatively cheap, very stable (downtimes are a webmaster's worst nightmare) and easy to use. Preferably also quite quick.

Security breaches are a webmasters worst nightmare. Downtime is an annoyance.

I'm not sure I really need hosting right now, but I'll be honest and say the things I use the most on my web server are ssh and vim, but I'm the exception rather than the rule.

Your setup seems pretty standard, if you want to offer extra services, some kind of cache for digg effect victims could be helpful.

Needs to run Solaris 10 on 2 dedicated servers with load sharing. Both should have some sort of remote desktop EG vnc through a VPN. Each box should have one terabyte hard disks with raid. It should have 24 hour monitoring from a technician. It should have 6500+ AMD X2 processor in each box with 30Gb of RAM. All for 10 bucks a month Big Ups

Free 100Mbit line? That's possible (close to free) but you want them in a Datacenter for more reasons. Like security, and powerfailure.
In a datacenter the servers won't go down if there's a blackout. And idk if you have ever been insdide one? Well I tell you, security is very strict.

Why raid? With that setup everything would seem stable, and unless you EXPECT some sort of damage or attack, theres no need for raid. Any setup w/o raid would run MUCH faster, tho less safer Whats That

unexpected hdd failure for some random reason, oofs, all clients are pissed. gg you lose, well 50% of the time...

But raid, one fails, no problem, take out, put new in, add to array .. clients see no downtime.

unexpected hdd failure? What kind of bullshit generic hdd are you using? Ive had a 40GB WD for like 6+ years in my home server P3 box, and not a single problem. Its all about how you voltage it and etc. Hdd's dont crash because of software reasons (attacks or etc), IF you know what your doing. Raid is useless in a setup you trust and don't expect something to happen. If you do, its only going to be your fault in the end.

There are many different types of RAID, and RAID is usually faster because you're more likely to be reading than writing on a server, and mirrored drives (RAID 1) allow consecutive writes on the same data at the same time. RAID 0 on the other hand has no sort of redundancy, but increases speed.

You want RAID in a proper server because hard drives fail. It's not a case of 'if', but 'when' a drive will die, so if you have your data striped you're prepared for your drives to die. Another option is sequential backups.

Deal with hardware long enough, you would know unexpected things can happen at any given time. Doesn't matter what piece it is. The EXACT same thing can last 10 years on one machine, and 1 year on another. Or even the same machine it is possible aswell.

Nothing is 100%....

Im not exactly sure about the difference between desktop raid, and server raid, but I lost alot of writing speed and reading speed on my 80GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9, by using any 1 of the different raid types (1,0,1+0, or 5) Huh

raid is not just for backup. It doubles the speed you can transfer data Big Ups onto/off of your disk (s)
