Why is it that Brits and Americans don't know as many languages as other countries such as Germany? We are we too lazy? I don't want to offend anyone with this, but a lot of people who sign up to these forums are forced to speak English or they get little help. Pretty much the same with many forums. English is supposed to be a hard language to learn, so why are people from other countries forced to learn it? I also find that people from Germany and some other countries other than America and England actully even type properly, while Americans and Brits don't even type legiable.

Yes, i sterotyped this to America and England. Please don't take offence. I don't mean all of America and England.

Because we become lazy, also, Germany and other country's like that, have better school systems compared to ours.

Other then that, allot are forced to learn English because English is the language for world politics and work.

Am taking a big guess here, but am guessing the English Empire, started it, as we traded and ruled 3/4 of the world, everyone was forced to speak English or not do trade with us and miss out on lots of money and the fact, they was forced to learn it, as we lived in their country's after we conquered them.

Because we don't need them.

English don't need to learn other languages as foreigners all learn English. It's simple as this. Your school system also reflects this: you can drop languages out of your education if you want to. From my 11 to my 22, I studied French; from my 15 to 22 I studied German and English. Language lessons are an important part of our education.

Other than that Belgium has 3 official languages: Dutch, French and German (as we got some German ground after WW I). It doesn't mean everyone speaks them but it does motivate you to learn it when you know half of your own country speaks another language.

Other than that, most movies, music and about everything I do at the Internet is in English Razz.

English is an International language.

All airlines, maritime shipping and radio utilise English as a primary language as do many others.

We do not have to understand any other language as the majority of places that we will go in the world fully understand us.

Yes it means that we are lazy when it comes to languages but that is the fault of the Education system. That then goes back to Local Goverment who have the final say in what we learn.

That's not a reason to be lazy and not learn a language on yourself / through cd's or books / private education. Razz

You were so lazy with learning French, that during year 9 the teacher simply gave up on you. XD

You want to know the real reason? My mom has probably run into a handful of people who don't speak English in her life. Not everyone is some globe trotting bohemian. The majority of the people who go through the US Education system have no reason to learn another language because they will never use it. They'll never leave the country and will never be put in a situation where knowing another language will be important. In Europe your borders are very close and so it is pretty likely you will be meeting a lot of people who don't speak your language. For most of us in the US we can't just drive a short bit and cross a national border. It's like a 10+ hour drive to Canada from my state. That's the closest foreign nation. Guess what... They speak English...

pfft, Dutch > All Languages. Smile

In school we we're forced to learn French or German, I didn't want to learn them. year 9 or year 10 I would have had to learn Spanish, And I didn't want to learn that. They were just typical languages you had to learn, I wanted to learn something unique!

I like the dutch language, It's a bit tricky to master but it sounds so cool, And pronouncing words is like speaking in tongues. Razz

And yes, Schools don't teach Dutch so I have to manually learn it, But there are a few videos on youtube that teach you the main verbs and stuff, So I think after a few weeks of watching these videos I'll get the basics down.

I also have a few friends who live in Holland and Rotterdam and I plan on meeting them sometime in my life, So my dutch would come in handy!

So I wasn't lazy when it came down to these languages, I just didn't want to learn them because they were just typical languages everyone learns. :V

Likewise for the British. Travelling around Europe, you can get by just with English in most countries. Not ideally, but you can get by.

What i find annoying is when people "tip liek dis wen tipin namuly dis dastor dis dust stoopid". I mean, i see people who can't even spell their own native language. Whats worse, is when people don't have English as their native language and they do a better job. It seems isolated to English, although i can't actually read Dutch or German, i never see anyone trying to correct them.

If you want to come here to America, you better learn English, because I sure as hell am not going to be forced to learn a language foreign to the country I live in. I'm not against learning another language, but I'm not going to learn one just because foreigners come to our country and can't speak it. If I were to go to your country you shouldn't have to learn English. I should have to learn your language.

I think American schools are dumbfounding the youth by having poor quality teachers who can't be fired because of the teachers union. Which reflects why more than half of American youth can't freaking spell or write properly. Just look at a lot of the people on these forums that can't even type legibly... its completely pathetic. The fact that there is a SPELL CHECK BUTTON on these forums and they still don't use it, well, that says something there...

Cause we dont live near 3-4 neighboring countries that speak a different language, we in the USA live by 2 countries, mexico and canada, canada knowig english also....we dont need another lnguage to speak to them, but with mexico, they dont understand english, so the two main languages ened up being english and spanish.

GO DAVE! I might even move out of the USA, not because of the US, but because of illegal immigration, I'm tried of working and seeing soooo many people that cant speak english and look rough, i'm not being racist against mexican people, but the illegal immigrants, just yesterday i had 5 families of mexicans at where i work...cant really serve them when you cant understand spanish and they dont even know english.....so they got mad at me after i simply asked them how was their day in english, the other 4 familes got angry and stayed or left later on because I dont know why...I cant understad them...so i dunno maybe they didnt order what they wanted? Working part time at a fast food chain with heavy ammounts of non english speaking mexicans is hard especially when you are busy and a line is out the door.

Because it's a pain in the ass to try and learn a language.
I did it with french, I never want to do it again.
Although, one exception would be Chinese.
Sounds like they say-

What Spoony said - everyone speaks English anyway. International business meetings in Hong Kong are done in English, most people in Europe speaks English, so you don't need it really. I guess IRC is your example of that along with these forums...

Oh before you say I'm lazy or something, I speak fluent French, Italian, and can have half a conversation in German!

The problem with Dutch is that tehre are too many fucking exceptions to the rules. On the bright side, we have very few rules.

Oh and i can't wait for an englishman to try and pronounce a dutch sentence, as even most germans(which language is pretty closely related) struggle with it.
