A workaround, if u have renguard, is to alt-tab so the game minimises, then exit renguard which will close your renegade session.

I had this problem when I had windows 2000,xp is fine though so I am not sure, I know it could sound/video problem, try using the WWConfig.exe in the renegade install folder, change settings test and so on. Also maybe change the windows display res to 1024/768 or 800/600, I know it is ugly, but just testing.
back when I had the problem, I just fixed it by never exiting the game
