Albatron GeForce 4 Ti 4200 P Turbo is a great card in my opinion. Check the review link in my signature, thats what made me buy it. It may not be the latest one but it has some great power. It runs faster than a Ti 4600 at default speed because of it's fast memory (3.3ns) and the copper heatsink. It runs everything beautifully, from Renegade to Planetside, it seems pretty stable overclocked. I would recomment it if you don't want to spend huge amounts on the latest card then watching them fall by 300% in cost over the next month because the "new" model has came out. It cost me around £110, which is reasonable for a Geforce 4 Ti 4200 cosidering it's features. I won't be upgrading mine any time soon, when i do it will be the next generation of cards I will buy.

Yeah he said best, not the fastest. In my opinion the card I mentioned is an excellent card and it one of the best ones in the series. Also their new Ti 4800 Turbo is said to be an excellent card as it can take advantage of the 8x AGP and it's speedy memory again.

The GeForce 4 Ti4800 has been shown by many review sites to be just a Ti4400 with AGP 8x and slight tweaking. The AGP 8x increases speed by something like 0.001% so there's no real effect. That explains why most Ti4800s are slower than most Ti4600s.
The GeForce FX 5800 ('the Dustbuster' - called this because of its monstrous 2-slot vacuum-cleaner-volume cooling system) was the biggest flop nVidia has had in recent times, and the GeForce FX 5900 is better suited to compete against ATI.
However, most sites show that ATI's top line Radeons are faster (plus more bang for the buck for the newly-EOLed products like the Radeon 9700 Pro and the 9500 Pro). ATI's new Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB, which uses G-DDRII, is generally considered to be the fastest card on the market at this point. (and one of the most expensive consumer-market cards)
In reality, the 256MB versus the 128MB graphics RAM isn't going to make much of a difference in most games and apps, so the Radeon 9800 Pro and the 9800 Pro 256MB are very close performance wise.
Then again, there isn't that much of a gap between the 9700 Pro and the 9800 Pro, just clock speed and some tweaking. For the most bang for the buck on an almost-top-of-the-line card, I'd probably go for the 9700 Pro. You can choose between BBA (Built By ATI) or the Powered by ATI cards (made by Sapphire, VisionTek, Hercules, etc.).
I'm running an ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500DV 64MB - works well for all games I've run on this system - pretty happy with the card.

For a budget (lets say sub $120), I'd say go for an ATI Radeon 8500, 9100 (which is just a rebadged 8500), or a 9200 Pro. The 9000 is the older version of the 9200 but is slower in almost all regards than the 8500/9100. However, you have to be careful with some of the 9100s, as some manufacturers are putting slower RAM on them to reduce costs. A good Radeon 8500 or 8500LE should be under $60 on eBay and will be just about as fast as the Radeon 9200 Pro and faster than the nVidia GeForce FX 5200 and the 5200 Ultra.
These days you can get a Radeon 9500 Pro on eBay for about $160, which is about as fast as an nVidia GeForce4 Ti4600 in most regards. A 9700 Pro generally can run for $250 or less on eBay and is faster than the Ti4600, FX5800, and about equal to the FX5900 in many areas.

nVidia did hold quite a lead on ATI for a very very long time. Only some ATI products out match their nVidia counterparts. However, most of these cared are so massively powerful, that you wont notice any difference in your games. That and the fact that the top of the line cards need a top of the line processor to match it in order to get the best performance.
However, nVidia has come out with a new chip that has yet to be implemented in its cards. Expect t to be out soon and retake the crown from ATI.
Even with all that, there is more developments in the works. There is a new PCI technology coming out soon. PCX or PCIX I think. I don't have much info on it, but it is going to be over 5 times as fast as AGP, making AGP a thing of the past, leaving as quickly as it came in.

Ya I was just reading something other day about a new slot for cards, a really fast PCI type....Forgot the proper name unfourtunatly....But heard as you've said to be many more times more powerful then AGP slots.

bigwig992 | I know it's probley old and crappy, but I know nothing about video cards.
I was hoping to buy the Radeon 7500 All in One card. A video capture card (need one for my analog camera), some kind of TV thing, and a 64MB video card. Will that kick my EXTREMELY OLD NVIDA TNT2 Pro Model 64 ass? I can run Renegade and Wolfenstein on that decently. If I don't put it in that computer, I'll stick it in this one, with one of those dandy (cough) Intel cards. The one on this can hardly run BattleFeild on mediam settings, and ever since it stopped working on me, EA says my video card isn't good enough (but it worked with BF for 4 months?). Weird. So is the Radeon 7500 decent?
|
The Radeon 7500 compares roughly to a GeForce 3 - definitely enough to run Renegade and other games decently (that doesn't mean at 1600x1200 with full AA and AF and eye candy, but pretty decently).
The All-In-Wonder cards have a built-in TV tuner and video inputs and outputs. So yes, from what you have described, the All-In-Wonder Radeon 7500 (64MB) should fit your needs.
If you want something a bit faster but not outrageously expensive, there are some options - the ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500 64MB, the AIW Radeon 8500 128MB, the AIW Radeon 8500DV 64MB (which has a digital TV tuner as opposed to the analog ones of all other AIWs, as well as IEEE1394 ports), and the AIW Radeon 9000 Pro, which is a brand-new card.
I'm running an All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500DV (64MB) and the card runs all the latest games pretty well. Renegade can be run at my LCD's max res - 1280x1024 - with everything at max and still runs very well. Other games for the most part run very well too.
The new PCI standard is called PCI Express, but it won't be supported for Intel processors until Intel releases its next chipset (or a modified 875P), which won't happen until at least holiday-season. Yes, it is supposed to be very fast, but support for it will take time, and ATI and nVidia will be releasing their next generation of cards in both PCI Express and AGP forms.
With regard to nVidia's release of a card to 'dethrone' ATI, both nVidia and ATI will be releasing 'tweaked' versions of their fastest cards, the GeForce FX5900 and the Radeon 9800, that will arrive by late fall.
Their next-gen cards, NV40 and R420, respectively, are estimated to be released by holiday season or a bit afterwards. nVidia, as usual, is promising doubled performance (just like the FX5800 was supposed to be 2x faster than the Ti4600 - Lol) and ATI is not commenting much on it, as usual.

L3f7H4nd3d | I have the currently fastest graphics card (in some benchmarks Nvidia wins, in others, my card.) See sig.

Yeah, but also keep in mind nVidia's recent 'driver cheating' with synthetic benchmarks, so that leads to the Radeon 9800 Pro beating the GeForce FX 5900 Ultra (NV35) in reality in more tests than preliminary benchmarks showed.
For those who didn't hear about nVidia's 'driver cheating' - most of it was with 3D Mark 2003, where the nVidia drivers would sense that 3DMark03 was running and would give higher numbers than usual and would lower image quality to give higher benchmark numbers. After that, it was found that they also implemented the simplest type of 'cheating' - if you rename 3DMark03.exe to something else, your nVidia card suddenly has a big performance dip in the benchmark. So nVidia's been under quite some scrutiny these days because of these attempts to illegitimately show that the NV35 (GF FX5900) is better than the Radeon 9800 Pro. As a result, there is no clear measure as to which is better - some games are nVidia-optimized while others play better on ATI.

The ending result settles like this, the N35 is better for gaming performance but lacks in the driver department at the moment and the image quality and AA, AF is inferior to ATI's 9800 Pro currently.
The Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB is the better card, not as good in overall game perforamce by 2 FPS, but has better image quality and fast AF and AA; aswell as being faster in benchmarks and D9.0 instructions. Aswell as being alot cheaper and better drivers. The Radeon 9800 256MB overclocked can do alot better than the N35.
Wait another month for the Radeon 9900 Pro which will be the next top performer.
There is no best, there is always a new one atleast every 6 months, overclock a 9700 Non-Pro and you will outdo any card on the market currently. Simple as that.
