I wasn't getting any helpful responses on the APB forums, so I copied and pasted all that I said on to this. Please help!

Post 1-
I have a Maxtor 250 GB External hard drive that I always have hooked up to my computer. I use it for large files like movies, music and some games (like APB). Recently my hard drive began to not open and instead give me this message:

"The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'External Hard Drive.Ink' refers to is unavailable. Make sure the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again."

I've checked the USB cord, it's plugged in fine and I've tried restarting it, unplugging and plugging in again all the cords and even using a different USB port- all with the above result.

I want to play APB :'(

Any suggestions? *goes to find the exact specs*

Post 2-
I just unplugged and replugged the power adapter cord, and it gave me two messages "New hardware detected- Maxtor Hard drive" or something and "New hardware detected- Disk Drive". Still cannot open it.

I have many files and a game or two stored on this hard drive, I need to fix this! I've tried reinstalling the software and everything imaginable including reversing the USB cord, securing all the cords and many other things...

yeah

Does its icon appear in "My Computer"? (even if clicking on it does nothing or returns an error)

If it does, Right click on it

Properties > Tools Tab > Check For Errors > Check both the boxes, click "Start" or "Ok"

Hope that helps.

I know at work we had an external 160 GB drive and it lost its file table, and corrupted the rest of the data on the drive. We had to reformat the whole drive because of that. We lost a lot of data because of that. So be careful with those external Maxtor's, they aren't the greatest solution.

You could also go into your device manager and remove the drive and then plug it back it back and let it re-install.

Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware Tab>Device Manager>Look under Disk Drives. Right click on it, Uninstall.

Did you do a ScanDisk? Were there any errors?

Maxtor and anyone don't get along well...

I have never owned a Seagate drive but I have always heard good things. With their acquistion of Maxtor I wonder if quality will improve...?

Just hope that it doesn't all come atonce, because they will fail. Every HDD will fail eventually, Maxtor's just fail more randomly and quickly I have found.

They fairly new, so it's not much of a contest, they're also in a RAID 0+1 or RAID 10 (Same thing) so my data is pretty safe. Smile
