ZoneAlarm is going out the window. It's driving me round the fucking bend. Why should I have to turn my firewall OFF to browse the Internet sometimes?
Every now and then it likes to randomly stop giving me access to the Internet. It doesn't say anything to do with blocking traffic; it claims everything is running as normal yet I can't use the Internet. But when I turn it off, everything works fine.
Long story short Zonealarm is the holy piss pot of fucking useless firewalls.
What firewall would you recommend and why?

McAfee.. Best firewall I've ever used/use, you can easily customize it, there is 5 default settings, blocks ANYTHING trying to acces the internet until you allow it, and when somthing is blocked (i.e. Renegade online) a little window comes up on the side asking to allow, allow once, more info, or block.. its a nice firewall,
Well, McAfee is an antivirus program actually, but it comes with the firewall. The antivirus part is pretty damn good to

What I mean is if you're behind a router and it is setup correctly theres no reason for a software firewall. However, before I had my router I used BlackIce Server Protection 3.6 and it blocked everything I had on my computer. It Can become annoying at first allowing the applications to use the net. But that is a one time thing.
I have my own personal reasons why you shouldn't use Mcafee for anything. Which I shall keep to myself.

A software firewall blocks on application, having a hardware firewall is necessary, having a software firewall is a plus because it will block outgoing traffic.
A good firewall is one which blocks incomming and outgoing traffic.
There's alot of good firewalls, Zonealarm does a good job but I dont like the stuff around it I just want a firewall and no bs.

Tbh some people have a firewall and/or Virus protection because they download porn and get infected like that!
If you don't use one then you're pretty smart with viruses and worms and spyware.
I use a firewall tho, My ISP (Blue Yonder PC Guard) gives me one for free, and It's not bad.
I turn off it's virus protection, Hogs too much resources, And I don't relay need one.
Presence is a curious thing, if you think you need to prove it... you probably never had it in the first place.

I have a router and Zone Alarm, and I guess I have the exact same problem that you do... if I my computer idles for, say, as long as an hour or so, when I try to get on the internet when I get back, I can't connect until I turn off Zone Alarm: "This page cannot be displayed."
So that's what I always do - turn it off, then turn it back on. It's stupid but I don't know how to fix it.

Not possible.
I'm just behind a router and I'm fine with that.
|
Sure its possible, some routers are more compatible then others, yours must be one of those.

That's my problem right there, only if I turn ZA back on, I can't use the Internet again.
There doesn't seem to be anything that sets it off. It's as if sometimes it gets bored and decides "Hey let's rile Dave up by not letting him use anything!"

Other than that I'd recommend Sygate, even though it uses more resources.
