If you're getting that message it means you've install things possibly in the wrong order.

It's best to:

Install Renegade
Install patch 1.037 (thats the one you're getting prompted for)
Startup the game, configure your keys and play the first mission, then save the game (I was getting weird errors that went away after I had actually started Ren and done a single player mission)
Install Renguard
Let Renguard download the core patch(es)
Install any skins/mods etc.

Play.
