Have you looked into the settings of your dialup connection?

Sometimes your dialup connection can be set to auto-disconnect after a period of inactivity, this may be default with laptops or something, i don't know.

I've been using a 56k modem from this computer for over a year with Renegade, and never had a random disconnect.
